Ödön von Horváth wurde nicht alt. 1938, da war er gerade mal 36 Jahre, wurde er in Paris auf den Champs-Élysées durch einen herabstürzenden Ast erschlagen. Der letzte Roman des österreichisch-ungarischen Schriftstellers, Ein Kind unserer Zeit, spielt während einer Diktatur und zwischen zwei Kriegen. Es ist die Geschichte eines namenlosen Soldaten, der sich vollends mit dem System identifiziert. Der Einzelne zählt für ihn nicht, er ist lediglich Teil des sogenannten Volkskörpers. Horváths damalige Lebensgefährtin, die Schauspielerin Wera Liessem, liest dieses Stück, in dem die Unmenschlichkeit des Regimes voll und ganz deutlich wird.
