Este relato trata acerca de un hombre llamado Celso Arteaga. En una fiesta de su ciudad había una tradición de hacer un discurso y poder entregar una sardina de metal a la mujer que a cada uno le gustara. Celso hizo el discurso y le entregó la sardina a Cecilia Plá. Cuando se veían no hablaban entre ellos y otro año Celso volvió a entregarle la sardina a Cecilia. Pasaron los años y Celso se casó y tuvo hijos. Volvió a la cuidad con la intención de alquilar una casa, encontrándose por casualidad con Cecilia. Encontró que había estado guardando la sardina y más tarde vio que la estaban enterrando.
