Loved it! It is hilarious.

Have already heard this three times... and am sure there will be many more. If you like the works of Douglas Adams, Terry Pratchett, Neil Gaiman... you will enjoy this immensely

Hilarious

A wonderfully funny radio program... Imagine if you took Monty Python, Lord of the Rings, and Red Dwarf and squished it all together... Bingo, this is it... Delightful bad punning and innuendo, not to mention the superb digs at pop culture and current events... Fabulous performances throughout... Absolutely worth the credit and you're welcome...

Not what I expected

I didn't know what to expect from this dramatization. I expected fantasy set in an alternate universe as it was written. But.. the synopsis doesn't do it justice. This is very funny with a lot of tongue in cheek humor. I started listening and had to back up several times for the jokes and funny happenings. Most of this is due to the background music and sounds blocking out softer voices. The humor is adult but not graphic. There should be more about the villain and about the dog. It is omitted in the synopsis that the dog is changed into a human. But he remains the faithful canine companion. He behaves as I would expect my dog to behave if he became human. His values are that of the loyal canine who doesn't really understand why he is now human. But he goes along with it because of his master. The villain and his side kick are funny too. The supporting cast is great. I am glad that I browsed and got the entire series on one audiobook. Anyone who enjoys radio type dramatizations and humor should give this a try. My only complaint is that the background music and sounds made the voices hard to hear at times.

Fun but Very Repetitive

What did you like best about Elvenquest? What did you like least?

I love the premise of a spoof fantasy series along the lines of what Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy does to science fiction. This is solid British comedy with its mixture of intelligent wit and utter insanity. That being said, the series gets very repetitive quite quickly. Most of the characters seem to have one joke to them, which they do over and over again. Yes, Dean is gay, Vidar is an idiot and Penthiselea is clueless about sex. Douglas Adams and Terry Pratchett, however over the top their stories could get, were very good at grounding themselves with complex believable characters, who were interesting in their own right.

Which character – as performed by the narrators – was your favorite?

Kreech, Lord Darkness' minion (voiced by Kevin Eldon). He is Pinky to Lord Darkness' Brain or Baldrick to Lord Darkness' Black Adder.

Hilarious, Irreverent, and utterly Captivating

Simply put, I adored it. Definitely an Encore in order! The sound effects signaling the change of scene to the Evil Lord of Darkness brought a chuckle before the actors spoke. The actors voices perfectly portrayed the characters to a T!

One of, if not THE best comedy series I’ve listened to.

I wish there was more like this, but have not had much luck finding it. Funny and entertaining from start to finish.

saved by the evil characters

coming to this straight after Hut 33 I wasn't initially sure I'd done the right thing. However, with the first couple of set up chapters out of the way, things got interesting. I shan't spoil it with details, but suffice to say that the combined characters of the Lord of Darkness and his right hand sycophantic 2iC, Creech are worth listening to all by themselves. Overall I gave this a decent rating, but do believe that without the talent of those actors it wouldn't have got above the 3/5 mark

Brilliant.

Love this story. Just my sort of humour. If you like Terry Pratchett or Blackadder or Yonderland, you may like to try this too.

A gem of a series. Very funny and very clever.

Great acting, great scripts and very funny. All are brilliant but Kevin Eldon as Kreech and Dean deserves a special mention. Buy this and you won't be disappointed.

Enjoyable but not particularly engaging

I listened to a random episode of Elven Quest on radio 4 extra a while ago, and I remember thinking that it might be worth buying a whole series to get the full experience. Which is why I was so pleased to find this bumper audiobook that includes all 4 series!

On the plus side, you don't need to be a fan of Dungeons and Dragons to enjoy this programme as most of the jokes are based on relationships, gender stereotypes and a typically English changing-room humour. The relationship between Lord Darkness and his hideous sidekick Kreech is particularly well-imagined, and involves some of the funniest moments.

On the down side, most of the jokes are so familiar and well-worn that they're not particularly funny, just mildly amusing, and some of the performances feel a bit lacklustre.

In general, it never really lived up to my expectations and I came away feeling that if the writing had been a bit tighter, then this could have been an extremely funny and successful series. I think I was spoilt by listening to the hilariously funny, anarchic and surreal Bleak Expectations before I moved onto Elven Quest. If you're looking for a good laugh from an audiobook then I suggest you try that instead.

Having said all that, I was pleasantly surprised that this audiobook includes all 4 series in one go. Not only does it make it a lot easier to listen to, as you don't have to keep chopping and changing between files, but it's also a heck of a lot cheaper!

One of the best comedy series I've ever heard

If you like Lord of the rings
but imagined what it would be like if it was funny
look no further. This audiobook actually has a better plot and storyline than most new films
I give this 10/10
it never failed to bore me in all 24 chapters
yes 24 chapters.
It is a long listen but so glad it was. I never wanted it to end

Loved this, hours of laughs

What made the experience of listening to Elvenquest the most enjoyable?

Looking forward to every episode, I listened to these in the gym, made me look forward to going!

What did you like best about this story?

Great performances, well written episodes every time, lots of laughs, I could go on and on.

Which character – as performed by the narrators – was your favourite?

Hmm, a tough one, Stephen Mangan was great in this, it was a good ensemble cast, perhaps Alastair McGowan edged it as Lord Darkness.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I'm not sure about being moved, but I laughed in every episode.

Any additional comments?

I've already recommended this to a few people, great series, good value (24 episodes, 4 series in one collection), and won't disappoint.

The greatest adventure a dog and his best friend ever had! Enjoyed the journey but may be should have been one series shorter to avoid the feeling of déjà vu . Great buy.
