Publisher's Summary

Threatened by an Elloryan invasion reinforced by the Ancients, the sanctuary Ember and Max sought in DormaSai after Kael’s burial is at its end. A civil war rages in Cethos, and the threat of Wildland tribal attacks in the Blood Kingoms is imminent. They can offer no help to their Southern neighbors, leaving DormaSai as all that stands in the Ancients’ way. When the peace conclave crumbles and the Ancients are forced from DormaSai by unexpected allies, Ember and Max turn their attention to preparing for the Ancients’ inevitable return.

One year after Kael’s death, the Ancients return for the Human Animus seal, and with them, comes the full might of Emperor Mero’s Elloryan military machine. On the dawn of war, startling information from the North reaches the DormaSai military camp as King Kohl’s spies return from Corynth. They bring tales of a DeathWizard restoring the rightful Bale heir to the Cesthosian throne and freeing Talohna’s only ArchWizard from the clutches of the DragonKin.

Ember, Max, and Yrlissa are convinced that only one DeathWizard would have cause to do either - Kael.

As war with Ellorya erupts, their hope that Kael is somehow back from the dead must be set aside. The war that all of Talohna has dreaded for so long is about to begin, and hope is a rare commodity during any war.

phenomenal!!! Best series

I cannot say enough good things about this entire series. You know how a lot of books will do a really good 1st book a really good 2nd book and then they fall off on the 3rd and it's not that good, that is not the case with this series the Writer did a phenomenal job. I was hanging on my seat for every moment I am so invested in all the characters. Seriously start reading the series it is so good I can not say enough good things about this rider the narrator and the story so good. It could be the next Game of Thrones it is that good. I cannot wait for the next book.

Dumbest Protagonists Ever

Want to listen to a book where all the protagonists are completely stupid and consistently make poor decisions? The series for you, jeebus! So infuriating

Biggest let down ever

The third book of The Darkness within saga fucking sucks. There was so much build up, so much expectations, but that all died in a brutally awful manner.

To start with the author regressed in his writing skills. The first book was really cringy, but I gave it a pass since the second book improved a lot in story telling, but for whatever reason the author turned the cringyness back up to a 100,000%. And this is not the funny sort of cringy but the kind that breaks immersion and makes an impossible to get back into the story.

I had so many hopes for this story but most if not all the plot lines ended in a stupid anti-climactic way.

Then there is kale, who keeps getting stronger, but then is nerfed so badly that tavern drunks can kick his ass. Seriously what the fuck, this book ruined the series for me.

Here's my recommendations: save yourself the time and audible credits by finding yourself a new fantasy series to listen to, because I am done with this one.

Don"t waste your time!

A hero who is a God one minute and weak sniveling baby the next. A hero who is constantly conflicted by the stupidest things. Being an avid fan of high fantasy I plowed through three books of this series constantly hoping it would get better, or at least bring at least one of the story lines to some sort of closure. There is no sense of "YES!!!!!That's what I was waiting for!" in this story, only a continual dribble of idiocy. Complete waste of time!!

If you want a trilogy with an ending - not here

Ever read a series where you like the protagonist, you like the concept but…This is one of those. The word impossible is used way too often and you soon learn that means entirely possible, but the characters never seem to get it. They all make dumb decisions, over and over; but not to worry, as soon as you read, he or she are overwhelmed by something they just can’t withstand, they immediately not only withstand it, but seemed to have planned it that way. Finally, I only started the series because it was a trilogy with all the books available. Well if this is a trilogy, it’s a trilogy without an ending or climax. It latterly just stops with the characters trying to figure out the next step in the middle of the crises, there is zero resolution. Disappointed and frustrated.

The devil is in the detail...

That is relevant to both the book and my review :)

Firstly, I highly recommend this series as both the author and narrator do a great job...

This series has a fairly complex story and there are disadvantages of listening to an audiobook. It is not easy to refer back to items in the story and it is easier to get similar names muddled up as seeing them written creates greater distinction. That aside, for me, the job a narrator does to bring a book literally 'to life' far outweighs the disadvantages.

I had a gap of a few months waiting for book 3 to be released and when I started listening to it I found I could not follow the story and was losing interest. I stopped listening to book 3 and listened to the last 3 hours of book 2 and returned to book 3. My understanding and enjoyment returned!!

I am eager for the next in the series and will make sure I review book 3 before I begin listening to it :)

Too much, too many

I ended up becoming tired of this book way before the end. For me there are too many characters, too many locations, too many different types of magic, too many races, elven, vampyre, witches
, dragons, both good and bad, dragon kin, dwarves, humans, on and on. It reads as though the author has looked for every fantasy trope available and lugged it in. Just needs a unicorn to be the cherry on the top !

Cant wait for the next installment

The magic systems, culture creatures and world are very original. There are some links to current fantasy with races like eleven, Fay and dwarves but on the whole has a new and original feel

Badly balanced, not exciting.

I liked the first two books but in this one I felt there was too much conflict. one conflict after another without any periods of rest or calm. It mod the story difficult to enjoy as every moment was a tense one.

also I felt like the cast loses way too much. Seriously they suck at every step. Unless they suddenly get a buff to their intelligence next book or the antagonists become stupid, they can not win because of how much smarter the villains are setup in this book.

great book

the quiet in the tree like the series I like the twist and turns and also like the way they portray as just because you might have some knowledge or might be older or and smarter you can still be wrong I can't wait for the next book
