Er würde für seine Kunst sterben - andere würden dafür töten. Die Kommissare Amaryllis Winter und Falk von Heeren werden in eine heruntergekommene Villa am Berliner Müggelsee gerufen. Im Wohnzimmer liegen vier Leichen - bestialisch ermordet mit einer Art Säbel. Schnell stoßen die Ermittler auf eine Verbindung, die in die Kunstszene führt und zu einem geheimnisvollen Gemälde, von dem niemand weiß, ob es wirklich existiert. Doch die wenigen Zeugen, die sie finden, widersprechen sich in ihren Aussagen. Fast droht die Suche nach dem Täter im Nichts zu verlaufen, als Amaryllis plötzlich feststellen muss, dass eine Spur in ihre eigene Vergangenheit führt.
