Else, Tochter eines Wiener Rechtsanwalts, erreicht im Kurort San Marino ein Brief ihrer Mutter, in dem sie Else bittet, diese möge den Kunsthändler Dorsday um ein Darlehen für Elses Vater bitten. Dorsday willigt zwar in das Geschäft ein, stellt dafür aber eine Bedingung, die Else in schwere Gewissensnöte stürzt.
Seine 1924 erschienene Erzählung "Fräulein Else" gestaltet Arthur Schnitzler als einen durchgehenden inneren Monolog, als Zwitter zwischen Drama und Novelle.
