What a lovely novel! Reading the original makes you realize how shallow the variants of the story, often presented in movies and plays, are. The narrative is vivid and laden with pictures. I could see the events unfold on the screen of my mind. The philosophical message of the story comes out loud and clear...a true treat for book lovers. This is what I would like to call 'sublime horror.'

The narration is also good but would have sounded much better if there were no technical problems owing to inept sound engineering. Dan Stevens skillfully creates the moods with his great voice and modulations. However, there appear to be technical glitches in the recording. Sometimes two pieces of narration apparently recorded at two different times and brought together later do not gel well. The clear change in voice dynamics jarred my ears in a couple of places. Besides, some lines are spoken twice ... this is again a defect in audio editing. The problems with the narration have nothing to do with the performance of Dan, they exist because of bad sound engineering.
