Publisher's Summary
Brought to you by Penguin.
Vernon Alverstoke sees no reason to put himself out for anyone.
But when a distant connection asks for help, he is quickly plunged into one drama after another by the disorderly Merriville family.
Surprisingly, he finds himself far from bored - especially when he encounters their strong-minded daughter, Frederica.
However, she seems far more concerned with her family's welfare than his romantic advances....
Critic Reviews
"Absolutely delicious tales of Regency heroes.... Utter, immersive escapism." (Sophie Kinsella)
"I could mainline Heyer's Regency romances until the end of time and still not get bored.... Georgette Heyer is perfect lockdown escapism." (India Knight)
"One of my perennial comfort authors. Heyer's books are as incisively witty and quietly subversive as any of Jane Austen's." (Joanne Harris)

Thoroughly enjoyable!
Joe's Jameson, I think, is that rare non-female narrator that doesn't make the women he voices sound shrill or bleating! His 'Felix' was particularly engaging. This is a wonderful Heyer and Joe Jameson does it full justice.

Great story pretty good narration
This narrator does a good job at the voices and consistency, his only problem is a slight tendency to mispronounce words, some uniquely period words (on-dits), some things like ‘kindling’. This is pretty standard for the new Penguin remakes however, so I don’t regard it much.

Good story. Some mispronunciations marred otherwise good narration. One of the better Georgette Heyer books - all of which are miles ahead of her "regency romance" imitators.

Great story let down by narration errors
I really love this story so I was excited to see it available and had it on my pre-order for ages. However, having listened to it, I think the narrator could have done with reading the book a couple of times prior to recording as his performance is more than once at odds with the actual dialogue. In addition he at least twice seems to confuse which characters are actually speaking. It doesn't completely ruin things, but the performance could have been so much better with a little more preparation.

What an exceptional reader
This was the first Georgette Heyer that I read about thirty years ago. I loved this book so much that I thought that I would revisit it. Well the first and most important is that Joe Jameson reads superbly. The characters really come to life and I loved the multiple tones of voice he used. Very often, I find myself cringing at mispronounced words. That is not the case with this reader. He really managed to bring the humour of Heyer to the forefront and despite walking around the supermarket chuckling I just couldn’t put this one down. Really couldn’t recommend more

Best of Heyer’s books
Excellent narration & depiction of most of the characters especially Alverstoke & Felix. Frederica’s part was rather blandly presented & failed to capture her mischievousness and sparkle. It was rather read in a monotone. The story itself is delightful with a strong heroine of sufficient maturity and sophistication to match the powerful hero. Interestingly the book really is told from the hero’s perspective delineating his thoughts & feelings to a greater extent than the heroine’s ~ somewhat an unusual angle.

Innocents abroad
Bringing her family to London for the season involves Frederica in a series of unexpected situations into which she draws the formidable Marquess of Alverstoke. Drama and comedy are mixed equally in this clever reading from Joe Jameson which I enjoyed thoroughly. He brings each character to life and sustains our interest to the end. I will enjoy this again.

Brilliant narration
I’m a long time Georgette Heyer fan and this audio book of Frederica by Joe Jameson was absolutely excellent. The many voices he was able to do was incredible and he has a lovely warm speaking voice for the main character Alverstoke. A delightful story of big sister Frederica and her care of her siblings, all with their own different characters and her efforts to bring her beautiful sister Charis into society to make a good marriage. It was non stop fun . Thoroughly enjoyed it! Looking forward to any other Georgette Heyer novels read by Joe Jameson

A classic
Fredericka is concerned with family matters to her own detriment.
Alvastoke is a rich man with little empathy, until Fredericka's brothers descend on him to force him to help.
They were at the age, they needed a male role model, and Vernon Alvastoke had the ways and the means to make things happen.
Fredericka has plans to present her beautiful sister to society. She wants her to have the chance to make a good marriage.
Carissa may be beautiful but she is naive and wilful. Disaster is averted by Trevor Charles, Vernon’s private secretary.
