About this listen

Hear actor Sidney Poitier, TV critic David Bianculli, and film critic David Edelstein on this edition of Fresh Air.

Sidney Poitier was the leading African-American actor of his generation. His Academy Award-winning classic film In the Heat of the Night is now out in a 40th anniversary edition DVD. It won Best Picture. Poitier was the first African American to win the Academy Award for Best Actor in 1963, for his performance in Lilies of the Field. His other films include The Defiant Ones, A Patch of Blue, Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, and To Sir, With Love. (Original Airdate: 4/18/2000)

Then, David Bianculli previews the new series Breaking Bad. It premieres on the AMC cable network this Sunday.

Finally, David Edelstein reviews Cloverfield, a disaster film featuring a monster that attacks Manhattan, captured by shaky Blair Witch-style camera work. [Broadcast Date: January 18, 2008]
