About this listen

From the codirector of the Mayo Clinic/Arizona State University Obesity Solutions Initiative and inventor of the treadmill desk comes a fascinating wake-up call about our sedentary lifestyle.

That the average adult spends 50 to 70 percent of their day sitting is no surprise to anyone who works in an office environment. But few realize the health consequences they are suffering as a result of modernity's increasingly sedentary lifestyle, or the effects it has had on society at large. In Get Up!, health expert James A. Levine's original scientific research shows that today's chair-based world, where we no longer use our bodies as they evolved to be used, is having negativeconsequences on our health, and is a leading cause of diabetes, cancer, and heart disease. Over the decades, humans have moved from a primarily active lifestyle to one that is largely sedentary, and this change has reshaped every facet of our lives - from social interaction to classroom design. Levine shows how to throw off the shackles of inertia and reverse these negative trends through simple changes in our daily lives.

First half of the book is very informative but rest of the book is just the author's story. But first half has enough information to say, it's a must listen.

First half is very informative

It makes me more happy more addicted to being in motion. I hated sedentary life always but this book makes me kick the chair. I shall kick the chair ruthlessly.

Did not expect much from this book, just picked it up at random. But it turned out to be one of the best books to be listened to as an audiobook. I use the Nike + app while running and listening to audiobooks. And to my surprise, knowing that this man is behind the invention of the technologies my current lifestyle brought a great deal of happiness and amusement. Great book!

A must read Gem!

Take your seat belts off before you read this book, for it will eject you from your seats and make you avoid sitting until your legs beg for it.

Within the first two chapters, Dr. James Levine convinces you that you're chained to your chair, even if the scenery around you might be changing.

Couch. Work Chair. Car Seats. Toilet Seats. Dining Chair. Bar Stools.

If we think our 20-minute HIIT, 5-day/week workout, and 10000 steps/day take us off the sedentary list, we're lying to ourselves.

Four chapters in, you're not a reader anymore. You're a lab assistant walking around with Dr. Levine as he shares data on how sitting is killing us.

Though I was aware of the concept of NEAT, Dr. Levine shares compelling evidence, anecdotes, and stories of his experiments and trips to countries including mine!

Could the book be less heavy on data when we have bought the point in the first chapter? Yes
Could the book be informative without being so cautionary it makes you walk while reading it? Yes
Will I ever run for chairman? You'll know the answer if you read the book.
