Publisher's Summary

Unconnected lives intersect in a bleak setting. Nothing will ever be the same.

Harbinger (def.): Something that foreshadows or initiates a major change.

Humanity lurches into an uncertain future, dismissive of warning signs. Only the most naïve believe humanity will step back from the brink. Yet in a place that doesn’t exist, a riddle, a puzzle, hope, fear, danger, salvation - all come together.

Zach Marjek has faced death in the far corners of the Earth and survived where others have failed. Now, he's thrust into an unimaginable situation where jaded mercenaries, an Inuit wanderer, a murderous Yupik, a young mother, a video game designer, a retired general, a new president, a Chinese marine, and mathematics prodigies must come together. Their lives and fates intertwine to revolve around a mystery with consequences that could range from disaster to salvation.

As the mystery unravels, a danger unbeknownst to the players lurks and prepares to take what cannot be taken. The future - and life - hang by the thinnest of threads.

Don't bother

Partial spoiler below.

The aliens have arrived on Earth to warn us about global warming and population control .

The author is a skilled writer but he takes much too long to make a point. The book contains hours of needless exposition to lay the philosophical ground work for his eventual point.

the narrator is quite good and if he was paid by the hour, he should now have enough money to retire.

If you are someone who can speak for hours without making a point and you embrace the view you that we are destroying the earth with global warming than this is a good book for you. For everyone else . . . don't bother with this book.

....Thud

I have LOVED the Crucible series but I'm not feeling this one... I had a section by section review going... but... better just to return it and walk away. Bummer.

Olan Thorensen at his best

This is a very fine and welcome addition to Olan Thorensen’s work. I read and enjoyed the Kindle version and wanted to listen to Jonathan Davis’s reading of the story since he brings so much nuanced development to the characters and story that I miss when I read it.

A modified excerpt from my Kindle version review follows: “…This is Olan Thorensen’s most ambitious, imaginative, and fast-paced story to date that blends science and science fiction with action-adventure (and a little romance) within the context of current existential problems facing humankind. A team of appealing characters make first contact and communicate with an extra-terrestrial intelligence that holds many insights into the future of humanity and our place in the cosmos…..”

Not one of Thorenson's best

As usual, Jonathon Davis was a wonderful narrator. Olan Thorenson, on then other hand, vascellated between highly exciting and incredibly tedious storytelling. Eighteen chapters of background developing the story? Really? While the action was well written, it was highly disappointing to go through the final chapters learning what happened to all the characters in excruciating detail. Totally unnecessary considering this is the first book in a series. And the subtle dig at President Trump near the end of the story was as undignified as it was unnecessary. Thorenson had successfully negotiated political pitfalls right up until that point, only to throw it all away for a cheap shot. Finally, the production company needs to up their game as there were a couple of QC checks left in the audio.

Nope

Got through three chapters and the story was still on chapter one. Skipped two more chapters, still on chapter one. I'm giving up. The terminology related to the supposed AI or programming is all wrong, not a good sign for the rest of the book. There is going to be password cracking with numbers scrolling fast on the computer screen. I can feel it. Goddard Space Flight Center is in Greenbelt, Maryland, at one point, which is correct, but 10 minutes later it appears in Virginia. I liked other books of the author but this one is a disappointment.

If you can stand reading Carl Sagan, by all means.

This book bored the hell out of me, to the point I was pissed for wasting a credit.

the man can tell a story

Olan Thorensen can spin a tale that draws you in. Don't start this book in the evening, you'll be up all night.

Awesome book

I don’t do many reviews but this book and Olan’s series Destiny’s Crucible deserves some attention.

Beginning of another great series. This book keeps your interest from the beginning. The pace is good just about the time things become routine story material something else interesting comes up. The science is fantastic as always with Olan’s books.

Jonathan Davis is an excellent narrator easy to understand. Voices are consistent.

Audible left some editorial notes in the first version of the books. But it’s just a couple I’m sure they will update the book and remove them.

But this book you want be disappointed.

Very good.

I can’t figure out if “The Object” is an “Egg”from Anyar...

I certainly hope the stories are taking place simultaneously. 🤞

Great storytelling nonetheless.

Excellent Story

Olan Thorensen is fast becoming one of my favourite authors. This was well-paced and kept my interest until the end. I hope the next book is out soon as it makes my commute home way more enjoyable.

The juice not worth the squeeze...

I was looking forward to Olans new book...but its 20 hours too long....
that is if it is a stand alone series but I am hoping it's in the Anyar universe...which it could very easily be !!!!
The narrator is one of my favourites but even so I suggest upping the speed to 1.10 or higher...
It's not really a groundbreaking story arc but some good ideas are involved...
I highly recommend NOT ALONE....

pleasant suprise

loved it, dont normally write reviews but ill be waiting eagerly for book2. the only downside i felt was the main character zach didnt have a lot of depth or development, there could have been a much more unique character instead of the generic super soldier. But thats trivial compared to how much i enjoyed every other aspect of the book.

Another great book

I bought this book because I have LOVED his Destiny Crucible series. I really enjoyed this book and found myself wanting to listen whenever I had a spare moment. I didn't give it 5 stars because I will reserve that for books that I simple love. However, I would still thoroughly recommend it as a very good listen.

Frustrating

This book was frustrating on many levels.
Although the overall plot was interesting the author seemed to be aiming for length rather than quality.
Additionally there were many holes in the story line and justification for storyline decisions were dubious at best.
Not sure i could put myself through book 2
