About this listen

Audie Award Finalist, Solo Narration - Female, 2014

Is it possible to write a sidesplitting novel about the breakup of the perfect marriage? If the writer is Nora Ephron, the answer is a resounding yes. For in this inspired confection of adultery, revenge, group therapy, and pot roast, the creator of Sleepless in Seattle reminds us that comedy depends on anguish as surely as a proper gravy depends on flour and butter.

Seven months into her pregnancy, Rachel Samstat discovers that her husband, Mark, is in love with another woman. The fact that the other woman has "a neck as long as an arm and a nose as long as a thumb and you should see her legs" is no consolation. Food sometimes is, though, since Rachel writes cookbooks for a living. And in between trying to win Mark back and loudly wishing him dead, Ephron's irrepressible heroine offers some of her favorite recipes. Heartburn is a sinfully delicious novel, as soul-satisfying as mashed potatoes and as airy as a perfect soufflé.

Critic Reviews

"Great fun. . . . Though Heartburn bristles ferociously with wit, it's not lacking in soul." ( The New York Times Book Review)
"Nora Ephron's first novel is warm, witty and wise." ( Harper's Bazaar)

Nothing mind boggling about the story'line but yet the author mixes sarcasm, cynicism, comedy and straight forward language to make the novel catchy. My 5 stars completely goes to Meryl Streep, her voice makes this novel so much more interesting, exciting and thoroughly enjoyable. Her voice over mimics of certain characters are simply outstanding and I was laughing away at many junctures listening to her version of the dialect. She is simply exemplary and that would be mildly putting it . Just for listeninheg to her narrate this novel it's a must listen for all the audible fans. And as after note, intersted in cooking, you will find something for you too in this simple yet captivating book.

Delightful listening

The narrator narrated it so well that it almost felt like watching a novel rather than just listening to it.

Engaging

Meryl Streep is a great narrator, adding flavours of her own to the story. The story begins with Rachel, a cookbook writer and housewife, finding out that her husband is cheating on her. Dealing with infidelity is hard on any day, but it’s especially difficult when you’re seven months pregnant, and have another toddler in tow. And that’s the situation Rachel finds herself in. With the support of her friends and family, and with a healthy dose of humour and food, she deals with her problems.

Great narration

When I started the book, I was not sure how I felt about the book, however the book grew on me. Nora Ephron has an underlying humour to her writing, which was showcased in the tiniest of instances throughout the book (Thank you Meryl Streep for bringing it to life and how!). But the best part of Heartburn was the note on which it ends.

A Quick and Funny Read

The writing puts you right in the middle of the room with the protagonist, and Meryl Streep really brings her to life with her charming and heartfelt narration. There's not a single dull moment here. Funny, with a side of heartbreak.

Delicious to listen to!
