Das Heiligenstädter Testament ist ein Brief, in dem der Komponist Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) seine Verzweiflung über seine immer stärker werdende Gehörlosigkeit ausdrückte. Beethoven war im Herbst 1802 zu einem Kuraufenthalt in Heiligenstadt. Er lebte in der ehemaligen Herrengasse 6 (heute Probusgasse 6), wo er an Klavierwerken arbeitete. Dort schrieb der erst 31- Jährige auch einen nie abgeschickten Brief an seine Brüder, in dem er in drastischen Formulierungen die Sorge und den Pessimismus um sein immer schlechter werdendes Gehör und sogar Suizidgedanken beschreibt.
