Von Heraklits Werk sind keine Originaltexte überliefert. Zur Verfügung stehen allein Bruchstücke. Problematisch ist, dass diese Bruchstücke aus den Werken diverser anderer antiker Autoren entnommen sind. Häufig sind es indirekte Zitate des Typs "Heraklit sagt,...". Nur selten finden sich direkte Zitate. Problematisch ist zudem, dass in der Fachliteratur bis heute umstritten ist, welche Fragmente authentisch sind. Die Authentizität von 1 bis 3 Dutzend Fragmenten ist umstritten.

In dem umfangreichen Textkorpus antiker Autoren jene Sätze gewissenhaft aufzufinden und zusammenzustellen, die mutmaßlich direkt oder indirekt Heraklits Ausdruckseinheiten sind, ist keine kleine Aufgabe. Erstmals wurden die Fragmente des Heraklit von Hermann Diels zusammengestellt und 1901 unter dem Titel ›Herakleitos von Ephesos‹ veröffentlicht. Das von neon-text media erstellte Audiobuch vertont diese Erstzusammenstellung.

Heraklit von Ephesos wurde um 520 v. Chr. geboren. Er starb um 460 v. Chr. Man nannte ihn den Dunklen.
