Nell’ottobre del 1502, il potente e spregiudicato Cesare Borgia si appresta a invadere la Repubblica fiorentina. Niccolò Machiavelli viene inviato presso di lui con l’incarico di spiarlo. Tra i due si crea uno strano e complesso rapporto. Il Valentino ha bisogno di qualcuno che – in forma anonima e ben pagato – stenda una sua biografia, per ribattere alle tante “calunnie” che circolano su di lui e sceglie proprio Machiavelli per farlo. Niccolò accetta per poterlo spiare meglio. Anni dopo, quando Cesare sarà già morto, Niccolò riverserà questa sua consapevolezza in uno scritto che intitolerà Il Principe. Verrà pubblicato postumo.
