Reidon Ward will become a god.

He doesn't know it yet, of course. Reidon was born weak, sickly, and small. Afflicted with a painful disease and abandoned by his parents because of it, he has had to fight tooth and nail for every minor advantage life has allowed him.

However, his perseverance has not gone unnoticed, and when the most powerful artificial intelligence in human history takes an interest in him, things began to change quickly. Granted a CAD - a Combat Assistance Device - with awful specs but an infinite potential for growth, Reidon finds himself at the bottom of his class at the Galens Institute, one of the top military academies in the Collective. Along with his best friend, Viviana Arada, Reidon will have to start his long climb through the school rankings and on to the combat tournament circuits that have become humanity's greatest source of excitement and entertainment.

So begins the rise of a god. So begins the ascent of the Stormweaver.

Best book I've heard all year!!

I could not recommend this more if I tried. My only gripe is that I read it when it came out and now I have to wait until winter for book 2.

Don't believe the hype. This book is average.

I got this book based upon the other glowing reviews this book has and after reading it I'm not sure if they're fake or what but I do not get the five-star reviews of this book at all.

Just because its so so so the same thing. Its got a fantastical world with a built-in level up system. It has a YA protagonist with a tragic backstory who is looked down on by everyone around him. It has a "badass" female love interest. And of course the protagonist is going to be the best because destiny (actually an AI) says so. This is so painfully average and what's been done before. It adds nothing and is only a five-star if you're the sort of person who can watch the same show happen over and over again and get pleasure from it.

TLDR: Its just another YA coming of age story. It doesn't deserve the praise.

Fantastic story, killer narration

I read this in paper copy. Stayed up all night to finish it, it was that good. 6 months later, I listened to the audiobook. Even though I knew what was going to happen, I still couldn't stop listening.

A GREAT book with unique take on sci-fi fantasy.

Between O'Connor, Chmilienko, and Daniels. This book has the best making I've read in a while. 3 great artists. One very great book that is a little outside the norm.
The gamelit aspects are a different spectrum from the normal leveling.
The fantasy tech suits are a nice highlight for the story.
And lastly the story itself has a good bit of uniqueness that doesn't deprive the story of any action drama or mystery.
I highly recommend this to anyone who likes sci-fi fantasy, but don't expect much magic in the normal sense though. I feel that the magic like portions of the story will ramp up more in the second book.

I love the book, but it's too long

The world building, "magic system" and character development are all really well done. Cannot be denied.

The first time I read this book, I could not put it down. I was completely enthralled. I was hoping I would enjoy it just as much 2nd time around in audio form, but I found myself not having patience to sit through it all.

What comes across in the 2nd read, or listen in this case ...is that there are a lot of sections that you can skip through without really missing anything important storywise.

So I guess, my only complaint is that the book can be long-winded at times ...and even that isn't as big an issue on the 1st read/listen. On 2nd listen tho, and I recognize that this is nitpicking because I wanted the book to be a timeless classic that I could go back and enjoy over and over again, I feel like it's too long. Details are over-explained, and honestly there's a lot of fluff in there.
I honestly believe that the book would be better if it were pared down.

That said, I would still highly recommend this book to anyone into progression fantasy. It's a super creative interpretation of the genre, and I am very much looking forward to book 2.

Can’t wait for the next book

I bought the book on a whim, expecting it to be the same as all the other power levelling fantasys out there. Where the main character/s grow so exponentially and quickly that they become overpowered within the first 20 chapters, however the slow progression in levels aptly conveys the hard work that the characters put in coupled with the suspension before anticipated reveals each battle and moment feels weighty. Inspite of the world building and and balanced power system, the authors have obviously put in a lot of effort into each character. With even the background characters having substance and depth, making you genuinely care about the characters and their relations.

So much fun

Ok I’ll start the 1st 2 minutes I was pretty concerned I had wasted a credit, thought I’d give it a punt though,
After the prologue it was great 30 hours of great listening, I enjoyed the characters and there interaction, there’s some bits that I didn’t like there’s a bit to much repetition of certain phrases, but not enough to spoil it, overall a 👍🏻

What do I do now it's ended??

Narration was excellent throughout with a diverse catalogue of characters all of which were nailed with great skill by Luke Daniels.

I honestly didn't know if this was going to be my thing considering it's a bit futuristic and seems to only have the one core element at the heart of the story; one on one dueling.

I am however pleasantly surprised by the development of the story and some very good writing. I soon became involved with the characters and completely got behind the one core idea of the book.

It does however use a tried and tested story template as the delivery mechanism for all this awesomeness; Unlikely hero takes a big knock, goes to school to be taught by some of the best, gets stronger and starts to realize herodom. It's not exactly new but innovation comes in the detail and the talent of the writers, which they do pull off just enough to make this excellent.

Basically, I loved it.

Which means the next book I start is almost certainly going to pale in comparison... :-(

Thoroughly enjoyable book.

Very enjoyable book. While the main character does have some luck, it is only realised through honest hard work. I would definitely recommend.

I can't believe I bought this book...

I can't believe I bought this book and it had only been out for a few days!
I love long books and to be honest, it suits my taste very well in every department.
I haven't even finished it yet and I am here to get the next instalment in my library for when I do - and I can't believe there is no next instalment in the series yet... now where is that crying emoji?

Brilliantly Brutal

A beautifully written weak to strong story with a likable MC. Combat is fast paced and brutal the way real fights are. The combat system is fairly unique the other characters are just as well written as the MC. Honestly I can't wait to get book 2 in this series

Loved it

I purchased this book on a whim and was definitely not disappointed!!.. I thought it was well written and particularly enjoyed the combat scenes. I found the characters likeable and not dull. Luke Daniels does an excellent job narrating and has come a very long way as a narrator since I first heard him 10 or so years ago.. not many books leave me craving the next instalment but this one did.... Also the narrator outtakes at the end were an excellent idea.. keep up the good work.

Streetfighter meets Harry Potter

Okay, so let's start by saying that while not everything in this book was to my taste, Iron Prince is still a clear 5 star listen / read. The writing was superb, the characters intelligent, the conversation natural and the story progression satisfying. O'Connor & Chmlenko have done a stand-up job producing a story that stands among the greats of the litrpg / gamelit genre. This book is incredibly easy to recommend, and translates well to narration - there are stats as are common in the gamelit genre, but they're not overwhelming.

I did have lots of little nit-picks, which I think all basically boil down to 'this wasn't quite my genre.' Set far in the future, this book at it's core is about a guy who goes to a school where the main aim is learning to beat the cr@p out of all the other students in ultra viscous, no-holds barred competitive tournaments. Sounds cool at first glance, but you've really got to like sci-fi and competitive fighting to enjoy it. I usually prefer fantasy games where I fight monsters, not other players.

The story is loooong at almost 34 hours, and there were a *lot* of fights in the book between characters I just didn't care about. I think this criticism holds regardless of genre tastes too. There's a lot of filler in this book - that 34 hours you see in the length section of the audiobook description could have easily been 24, and a much better story for it. Don't get me wrong - the scenes were all well written, but the story would have been exactly the same without them. I would have liked to see the MC learn from each fight he watched, not just enjoy them.

In terms of other negatives, levelling felt /blah/ and didn't get me excited at all. Too much emphasis was placed on tiny progressions - usually a good thing, I don't like OP characters and this isn't one - but in this case, underwhelming because we were constantly reminded how much better everyone else was. Why get excited when someone goes from rank D1 to D2, when there are 'A' ranked characters everywhere you look? Its great that the MC earns everything he gets. But most other books don't focus as heavily on the end destination, and I think there's a reason why.

There's other stuff I didn't enjoy, but I won't bother going into it because honestly, all in all these were minor issues in an otherwise impressive book. I won't be continuing the series, but I think if you're into competitive fighting and don't mind a little bit of waffle, you'll enjoy this book immensely.

Great but yet disappointing

The narration is excellent that truly emerges you in the essence of each character but the story was too predictable and often explained the shallow plot to death causing me to hit fast forward too many times. If the book was half the length it would have lost nothing and gained more momentum.

*Insert stream of curses* WHY IS THERE NO SEQUEL!?

This book keeps you on your toes the whole way through, the training montages are pretty epic and the foreshadowing is impressive.
The only downside is the author's love of suspense, and the narrator cannot read fast enough to get to the point atimes. This is not a negative review of the narrator by any means however, as he does a fantastic job of expressing the story through inflection and tonality, every well phrased sentence coming in a smooth cadence and drawing you ever deeper into the story.
Please, please, please write three more sequels (at least). Year 2, Year 3 and what he does after school!

Addictive

Stayed up way to late listening to this.
The action is fast paced like being at a sporting event
The characters are fun but often feel a bit more immature than I would like, but perhaps I'm out of touch,
overall a great listen and you have to love Lukes narration.
