कहानी एक आदिवासी लड़के से शुरू होती है, जिसके पिता आदिवासी अधिकारों के नेता हैं, एक जातिगत हिंसा में मारे जाते हैं। अनाथ लड़के को जान का खतरा होता है, इसलिए वह बद्दी (हिमाचल) में मज़दूरी करता है, लेकिन शोषण और धोखाधड़ी के कारण भाग जाता है। ट्रेन में वह छात्र नेताओं से मिलता है, जो उसे नौकर बनाते हैं। उनके आपराधिक गतिविधियों में शामिल होकर वह डकैती करता है, पकड़ा जाता है, लेकिन जूवेनाइल होने के कारण कम सज़ा पाता है।

जेल में उसकी मुलाक़ात एक क्रांतिकारी पॉलिटिकल कैदी से होती है, जो उसे प्रेरित करता है और शोषण के खिलाफ़ लड़ना सिखाता है। रिहाई के बाद वह लड़का वामपंथी पार्टी में शामिल होकर तेज़ी से आगे बढ़ता है। उसे एक लेफ़्टिस्ट लड़की से प्यार होता है, लेकिन पार्टी की कमान के संघर्ष में उसे अपने गुरु और लड़की दोनों का विरोध झेलना पड़ता है।

गाँव लौटने पर वह अपने छोटे भाई को उन लोगों के लिए काम करते देखता है जिन्होंने उसके पिता की हत्या करवाई थी। अंततः वह पार्टी की कमान संभालता है और अपने सवर्ण प्रतिद्वंद्वियों के खिलाफ़ चुनाव लड़ते हुए राजनीतिक शीर्ष तक पहुँचता है।
