Prosper Mérimée è stato uno scrittore, storico e archeologo francese. I suoi racconti sono intrisi di una sobria tragicità e hanno uno stile nitido e classico, anche se mantengono il loro carattere fantastico rivelando la forza dello scrittore.

Mérimée amava il misticismo, la storia e l'inconsueto e fu influenzato dai romanzi di Sir Walter Scott e dai drammi psicologici di Alexander Pushkin. Fu amico di Stendhal e condusse una vita da bohémien.
