Her giants have risen - all of them - and they're stronger than ever. The gods, still suffering from multiple personality disorder, are useless. Publisher's Summary
The Shadowhunters of Los Angeles star in the first novel in Cassandra Clare's newest series, The Dark Artifices, a sequel to the internationally best-selling Mortal Instruments series. Lady Midnight is a Shadowhunters novel.
It's been five years since the events of City of Heavenly Fire that brought the Shadowhunters to the brink of oblivion. Emma Carstairs is no longer a child in mourning but a young woman bent on discovering what killed her parents and avenging her losses.
Together with her parabatai, Julian Blackthorn, Emma must learn to trust her head and her heart as she investigates a demonic plot that stretches across Los Angeles, from the Sunset Strip to the enchanted sea that pounds the beaches of Santa Monica. If only her heart didn't lead her in treacherous directions....
Making things even more complicated, Julian's brother Mark - who was captured by the faeries five years ago - has been returned as a bargaining chip. The faeries are desperate to find out who is murdering their kind - and they need the Shadowhunters' help to do it. But time works differently in faerie, so Mark has barely aged and doesn't recognize his family. Can he ever truly return to them? Will the faeries really allow it?
Glitz, glamours, and Shadowhunters abound in this heartrending opening to Cassandra Clare's Dark Artifices series.

And they call us mundane!
The actual story was ok but there was an awful lot of recap and just listing what every character was doing, 'libby was reading, ty was on the computer, emma was clearing up pizza boxes etc etc'. It actually makes being descended from angels sound quite boring.
The narration lacked drama and there were occasions where the emphasis was on the wrong bit of the sentence (like the narrator hadn't read through it first).

Readers warning......
I do get a little annoyed about Audible not making it clear that books are aimed at children and young adults.
This is chick lit written for a teenage girls wtitten by a 16 year old, or at least it reads like a book written by a 16 year old.
I enjoy fantasy but am finding it increasingly diffocult to find books written for a mature, over 18, audience. This is a typical example - trite, precocious and 'I'm really cool' characters, complrx but boring plots. The writing...... The Gruffalo is by comparison is high literature.

great spin of. loved this book as much with better narrated
If you loved shadow hunters then you will love this spin off with a few cameo appearances of a few from the first set of books (even though I was confused with Max being seen though the portal) the audio read by Morena Baccarin was way better then the mixed up bunch that read immortal instrument series.hope they keep the same one as she was good.

So disappointed!
I love Cassandra Clare books but this one I can't even finish! The narrator bored me to tears, I couldn't distinguish between the characters because her tone was just monotonous and her reading of the narrative was too fast- it felt like she was rushing through it. Got to chapter 3 or 4? Can't even tell you the names of the characters, nothing seems to happen- where's the interesting opening? Where's the hint of a plot? There's no action so far. Perhaps it gets better further in but I'm afraid I won't be continuing with this audio.

Not as good as the previous series
Cassandra Clare's Mortal Instruments and Infernal Devices series were both excellent. I didn't find this first installment of The Dark Artifices nearly as captivating. I don't really like Emma as a character and I didn't find any of the others engaging enough to compensate for that loss. Plus, the plot was too predictable for me. It is still worth listening to, but I doubt I would have continued with the series if I didn't have Clare's other works to build up my faith that the story will get better.

An everyday tale of shadow folk
Would you try another book written by Cassandra Clare or narrated by Morena Baccarin?
I have enjoyed the other books in this series but this one is lacking a plot. If you listened to this one first it would put you off the others.
There really is no excitement.
Has Lady Midnight: A Shadowhunter Novel put you off other books in this genre?
No but would be cautious.
Did the narration match the pace of the story?
What story!

Riveting
While I have watched the Mortal Instruments movie I did not know much about the books and the Shadowhunter story. This series did not require you to have read the first series as it provided all the detail and back story needed to understand the Shadowhunter world. The characters and places were brought to life and I found myself thoroughly immersed in this world on a daily basis.

The story draws you in
Thought it was YA but the story was intriguing and made you want to listen on and it was hard to break from it. The narrator was good but did not attempt to put on different voices for different characters so a bit hard to follow at times.
I recommend this book if you like mystery mixed with some magic.
