Dichter Nebel hat die Inselstadt Lindau seit Tagen fest im Griff. Als die Nebelglocke am Läutwerk draußen vor der Hafeneinfahrt ausfällt, machen sich zwei Techniker mit dem Boot auf den Weg dorthin und machen eine grausame Entdeckung: Jemand hat den Körper eines Mannes auf dem stählernen Gerüst drapiert.

Die groteske Inszenierung der Leiche bereitet Kommissar Schielin Kopfzerbrechen. Bergung und Spurensicherung wären selbst bei günstigeren Wetterbedingungen nicht einfach, doch im Nebel gestaltet sich das Unterfangen fast unmöglich. Zumindest die Identität des Toten lässt sich klären - es handelt sich um den international renommierten Architekten Jost von Wydra. Allerdings gibt dessen Leben ähnliche viele Rätsel auf wie sein Tod.
