Au coeur de la forêt profonde, la Tigresse pleure la mort de ses petits. Des chasseurs les ont tués. Depuis, elle rôde autour des villages, le coeur empli de haine et de chagrin. Un soir, elle détruit les maisons, dévore les hommes et les bêtes, mais cela n'apaise pas sa colère, au contraire. Le pays est plongé dans la terreur. Le roi consulte la vieille Lao Lao, qui lui déconseille formellement de lever une armée. Une seule chose, selon elle, peut apaiser sa colère. Le roi doit lui donner son fils unique, Wen. Le roi et la reine ont le coeur brisé. Wen est si petit! Son père l'accompagne pourtant aux abords du territoire de la Tigresse. " Je n'ai pas peur ", dit-il à son père. Il marche longtemps, puis, fatigué, s'endort au pied d'un arbre. Déjà la Tigresse a senti son odeur...
