Publisher's Summary

Contains books one and two of Legend of Tal, a sword-and-sorcery, coming-of-age adventure.

A King's Bargain, book one

The legend of Tal Harrenfel is sung across the Westreach, and with each telling, the tales grow taller.

Though he's declared a hero by his king, Tal has never claimed to be more than a man. After three decades of fighting warlocks, killing mythical beasts, and hunting enchanted treasure, Tal has had enough. Running from the deeds of his past, he retreats to his home village under a different name and meets an unlikely companion: Garin, a village boy who dreams of making a name for himself and seeing the world beyond their sleepy town.

When Tal receives a mysterious visitor, both he and Garin find themselves thrown into a sojourn across the kingdom. Soon, they become embroiled in the plots of monarchs, on the frontlines of an ancient war, and at the mercy of a fabled sorcerer. Now Tal must live up to his legend, and Garin must discover his own power, to survive the forces pitted against them.

A Queen's Command, book two

The legend of Tal Harrenfel lives on, and a new song spreads across the Westreach.

Though Tal and Garin overcame one enemy, victory promises to be short-lived. Garin struggles with his inner demons. Tal is haunted by enemies and memories alike. And a long-kept secret has torn a rift between them.

But circumstances force them to continue their travels together. The roads from Avendor to Gladelyl, once the safest in the Westreach, are rife with danger. And Tal is bound to the commands of the Elf Queen whose intentions are unforeseeable. But reaching the elven realm is only the beginning of their troubles, for Gladelyl is in turmoil. The nobles grasp for power. The underclass and Eastern immigrants seek new rights. And an ancient enemy takes advantage of the chaos to turn them all against each other. Now Garin must come to terms with his demons.

seems like another weak spineless mc novel

ok so I'm about an hour or two into this book. 3 characters are traveling together. the "Legendary" Tal, a super powerful mage on direct assignment from the king sent to retrieve Tal from his self imposed banishment, and the young apprentice/friend/maybe son or close relation to the Legendary Tal not sure yet but tal seems to have a connection to him that hasn't been revealed yet. ok so these bird snake things show up in a flock and attack. they get their weak asses kicked and the snake chickens go after the cowardly apprentice (that ran like a coward) then the only thing that saves him is this evil spirit that has managed to hitch a ride in the cowards mind because he is a weakling with no will power. what is with all this weakling trash being peddled. the most badass dude in the land who the whole first chapter is dedicated to telling us all these badass things he has done and his name is feared and hated by the entire world gets his ass rolled by some snake chickens in the first couple hours screw this I'm out

Great series right up there with Ryan, Abercrombie, Hamilton and Cobble!

Great new series that I would rate in my top 5 authors. I truly enjoyed the book and the orator was exceptionally good. I really enjoyed the first 2 books and can’t wait to start the third.

Wonderful traditional fantasy adventure

Yes, it is in many ways a story that is familiar, but the world building and character development is great. I like the familiar feel of a traditional epic in a new place. I have spent a couple years trying to enjoy books that kept falling short. For me this one got everything right. The characters feel like home.

pretty generic

the writing was fine, but the story lacked originality. I didn't really connect with the main characters either.

good story

I will listen to the next books if they are available. I only 4 star for performance because the narrator does different voices for characters. those that do that always mess up with who is talking.

High fantasy with enough to keep listening

The story seemed overly predictable and most of the lead characters were hard to warm till. certain timings of happening feels rushed especially when it came to action. but generally a good listen for those that want a book to get through a work pass

Brilliant

This book grips you from the beginning.
So much intrigue, friends enemies demons and of course magic.
If you need a book to spellbind you this is it.
Brilliantly narrated by Derek Perkins who brings all the characters to life.

Decent although derivative

Hard as it must be for any fantasy writer, to not plagiarise Tolkien, this book should have themes familiar to any Hobbit.
That said, it's still a good story, and one I will continue with purchasing the next volume.
Oh, I nearly forgot, the narration is tip top.

A yarn for the dreamers and the escapist

The story is one of sorcery and the development of youth. Its a book keeps you interested from start to finish.

The narration by Derek Perkins is exceptional and his voice and expression lends life and reality to the tale.

Very entertaining

After reading some remarks both good and bad I had to dive into the story myself. After finishing the first book I can say that i really like the performance of narrator - kept me focussed on the characters and give them some extra dimension. Overal i liked the story and will continue listening to it - yes I read better fantasy with stronger story lines and better character building. But for me the story and characters worked nicely. If you’re up for some easy fantasy entertaining nicely told then this will not disappoint.

Much Better Than The First

Like others have said, this is much better than book 1. It’s got me wanting to read the next instalment.
Great characters, although I want to slap Garin. He’s so annoying. I am intrigued to what will happen with him though.
Over all, if you like fantasy, magical creatures, elves, dragons, and demons, this is for you.

well read, but the story's a little over egged.

too much time spent on florid metaphors and characters taking themselves too seriously. some may enjoy this style tho, and it is free.

More for early teenager than adult reader.

I struggled to finish book 2. The magic system seems underdeveloped and character relationships lack layered complexity. Book audience is likely early teenager.

Slow to start and hard to get in to, but got there

Excellent narration, a bit dark and slow at first, but a decent story overall. Still not ENTIRELY sure I've got a grip on everything going on, but will continue on and hopefully all will be resolved by the end.
