Der geistig erkrankte Schriftsteller Lenz reist in das kleine Bergdorf Waldbach, wo er sich in die Obhut des Pfarrers Oberlin begibt. Die Nähe seines Seelsorgers und die Ruhe des Tales wirken sich zunächst wohltuend auf Lenz aus. Doch auch Oberlin kann nicht verhindern, dass Lenz immer tiefer in den Wahnsinn abgleitet.
Büchners psychologische Erzählung erschien im Jahr 1839. Eindrucksvoll beschreibt sie die Etappen der psychischen Erkrankung Lenz'. Arnold Zweig sah in dieser Erzählung den Beginn der modernen europäischen Prosa: "Kein Franzose und kein Russe legt moderner einen seelischen Sachverhalt offen hin."
