Depuis saint Pierre, la papauté est installée à Rome. En 1309, le pape Clément V, délaisse la ville déchirée par des clans rivaux pour Avignon. Jusqu'en 1376, 7 papes se succèdent dans la nouvelle capitale de la chrétienté. Puis de 1378 à 1418, l'occident chrétien se déchire lors du Grand schisme où deux papes rivaux prétendent régner, l'un installé à Rome et l'autre à Avignon.
