Né le 30 mars 1853 aux Pays-Bas et mort en 1890 en France, Van Gogh est aujourd’hui un des peintres les plus connus au monde. L’héritage que Van Gogh a laissé derrière lui est monumental : plus de 2000 toiles et dessins, 652 lettres écrites à son frère Théodore Van Gogh dit « Théo » publiées en 1911 et en France en 1960 constitutent un témoignage unique de la vie du peintre. Inconnu de son vivant, il attirait les foules à titre posthume dans les expositions comme celle du Musée d’Art Moderne de New-York.
