 Es sieht nach einem jener Routinefälle aus, mit denen sich Privatdetektiv Aalbert im Rhein-Herne-Kanal bequem unter Wasser halten kann: Er soll die Schwester seines Klienten aufspüren, die mit einem Heiratsschwindler durchgebrannt ist. Doch mit der Erledigung dieses simplen Auftrags gerät Aalbert in einen Schlamassel ungeahnten Ausmaßes.

Er stört die Kreise eines Prostituiertenrings, wird in die Suche nach einer antiken Jadekette verwickelt, und bekommt es wieder mit dem Dicken Fisch und seiner Bande zu tun. Als die Liste der Fische, die tot auf der Strecke bleiben, immer länger wird, wird es auch für Aalbert richtig eng.
