Publisher's Summary

Ilona Andrews invites you to experience the first novel in the #1 New York Times bestselling series featuring the intriguing fantasy world of mercenary Kate Daniels…

When the magic is up, rogue mages cast their spells and monsters appear, while guns refuse to fire and cars fail to start. But then technology returns, and the magic recedes as unpredictably as it arose, leaving all kinds of paranormal problems in its wake.

Kate Daniels is a down-on-her-luck mercenary who makes her living cleaning up these magical problems. But when Kate’s guardian is murdered, her quest for justice draws her into a power struggle between two strong factions within Atlanta’s magic circles.

The Masters of the Dead, necromancers who can control vampires, and the Pack, a paramilitary clan of shapechangers, blame each other for a series of bizarre killings—and the death of Kate’s guardian may be part of the same mystery. Pressured by both sides to find the killer, Kate realizes she’s way out of her league—but she wouldn’t have it any other way...

Loved it.

The entire cast did such an amazing job of bringing Kate and the crew to life. It was a treat to listen to it. Goes without saying, loved the book.

Not impressed.

I wanted to love this. I am blind. I use descriptive narration at the movies. I was hoping this would be a similar experience. This was more like a bad table read. This is riddled with bad music and canned sound effects mixed with poor sound nixing. I have listened to the entire book series read by Renee Raudman at least three times. If you have to choose between the two, choose the non dramatized version.

Very enjoyable

I really enjoyed this version of magic bites. I always liked the original audiobook, but hearing every character in their own voice was great. There seemed to be a problem in chapter 3 with audio overlapping.

Pretty great Adaption

4-27-2023
This is by far my favorite series. I always come back to this series, but the 1st book is a bit rough to get through and I tend to skip a few parts.
Graphic Audio has done its magic and revamped the story. I was truly excited to see what could happen.

Loved the Cover art.
I'm very glad I started getting the Graphic Audio versions.., And I was very eager for GA to have a turn at Ilona Andrews Kate Daniels series. GA did such a fantastic job with the Innkeeper series, I was on pins and needles. As a member of BDH and have been a huge fan of House Andrews for years, I liked most of the books as they were but always interested in the new turns. I like a lot of the choices for the characters and will get used to others that didn't grab me right away. My only complaint is that as a person who happens to be losing my hearing, it is getting difficult to make out certain voices. This is a sound engineering thing, and I keep hoping it will get better with more works GA does. This really stands out with the background voices and sounds. I may know the story but I rely on my memory to fill in the confusion, rather than actually making out what a character says or sounds expressing. I had a difficult time hearing Curran. At first, I wasn't liking the voice but it was because I really couldn't make out half of what he was saying. At the end of Magic Bites, Currans' POV is clear and I could actually hear him clearly. (THANK YOU BTW, I LOVED the added shorts and POV this makes it worth purchasing on GA and Audible. And yes I did pay for both because I'm too impatient and I want to support GA as much as possible!) It will take time to get used to some of the voices but overall I did like it, after a few stops. Dr. Dolittle though, pretty much had to stop. Coastal Georgian. That was not what I expected. You win some, you lose some. Great job to the team and thank you!

Brilliant!

This is a terrific adaptation of the world of Kate Daniels by the Graphic Audio team. Nora Sofyan as Kate brings a whole new dimension to the character. I thought it would bother me (because I am used to her voice as Dina from the Inkeeper series (also by Ilona Andrews) but no: she gives Kate a distinct personality. Michael Glenn as Curran is terrific, everything I hoped it would be. Rob Moreira as Derek honours the character’s youthful personality. I could go on actor by actor but the gem among the cast is the actor voicing Dr Doolittle and his trademark “Coastal Georgia accent” -more precisely Gullah, something I learned thanks to Ilona Andrews blog. OMG! What a marvel! I enjoyed every second of his performance.
Now, the only problem is that I am anxiously waiting for the next title already!

Fun BUT.......

I enjoy this version, wish they didn't have odd music at odd times! The original version by Renee Raudman is great I love that I can have the book verbatim. They didn't seem to edit much out of this like they do with the Lupi series by Eileen Wilks (I had to stop listening because it made me confused with all they skipped.) The voices are all well done sometimes it seemed like there wasn't really any feeling behind the words which is odd like when Kate thinks she's going to die at the cave in. The Raudman version brought tears to my eyes this didn't seem to a big thing here. And as I said they'd play music that really didn't work or even make sense to what was happening like after the phone call and she goes to find the punching bag it just pulled my attention. Could be I'll enjoy the next book better, we'll see. And if not I can always go play the Raid man version if I don't. However I did enjoy the whole different people playing the roles so we'll see love anything House Andrews does so this is a fun stop until more Innkeepers lol!

Love the dramatized version

I really enjoyed listening to the Graphic audio version of the Innkeeper Chronicles, so I was really looking forward to this book! I enjoyed it a lot, but there are a couple areas in the book, in part 3 and 5, where the audio is garbled. Both times it doesn't last too long, but it takes you out of the story and can be confusing to parse. However, the rest of the book is great and well worth the wait.

Looking forward to more Graphic Audios

I'm happy that this series is finally going to be released as graphic audios. I pre-ordered the 1st and couldn't wait. The only problem is the audio is messed up at Chapter 3 when Kate meets the pack and is introduced to Corwin. Hope they fix it and update.

Magic Bites - amazing graphic audio adaption!

I loved this book and series when I first found it on Kindle during the pandemic. Graphic audio took it to the next level. What I really loved though was the Dr. Doolittle character/actor. GA nailed it beyond even my imagination :)
I'm so excited for the next one!

Wonderful cast, great story, voices makes it better

I have this book on kindle, paperback and now on audio book- with the Graphic Audio version because I like the different voices of the characters and the very dramatic and active role they tell the story. When I read alone, that is how I read the story, now I get to just listen, chill, and laugh right along to the perfect voices of Kate, Curran, and all the wonderful cast that makes this story stand out in audio form. It’s perfect! I can’t wait for the next graphic audio version so I can get that one and the rest of the Kate Daniels world!

Dramatized Adaptation is so-so

Here is my opinion, based on listening to the Renee Raudman version too many times to count:
The different voices are great! I love Curran's voice, Jim's, and even Kate's. There are a few like Mahon and Aunt B, their voices just don't match their description, but I can overlook those.
What I have a problem with is the background music. It's like they found the cheapest Open Source music and put it in the background. The sound effects didn't bother me very much. However, the music takes me out of the book so many times I can barely stay in it.
I've got all of the previous version's books with Renee, and I'm not sure I will buy the subsequent books. I hope they fix the music issues, because I would love to continue to collect them.

So much better than other version…

I’ve read the whole series and was excited to listen to the audiobooks but couldn’t make it through the other version as the narrator grated on me. Was really excited when I seen they were releasing another version. It’s sooo much better, the voice of the main character ‘Kate’ really fits unlike the other versions. The only con would be the background music as it’s a bit distracting but this is usual for graphic audio, they get a bit heavy handed.

WE LOVE KATE

I RATE KATE DANIELS BOOKS VERY HIGHLY BUT THIS VERSION WAS SPOILED FOR ME BY THE DRAMATISATION THE MUSIC WAS INAPPROPRIATE AND HORRIBLE. OVERALL I PREFER A PLAIN VERSION WITH ONE OR TWO NARRATORS.

The standard audio is much better

I am an avid fan of the author and this series in particular and have every English audio book she has released.

I have listened to the Dramatic Audio of the Inkeeper Chronicles and I felt they worked in that series in a way they really didn’t for this book.

Kate often lacks emotion, other characters sound off (Doolittle in particular) and Curran felt like a let down to me in the main story he lacked the emotion personality and charm that I associate with him. (In fairness the part at the end when it is from curran’s perspective is better).

Though the part that grates most for me is the heavy handed music and sound effects on the right scenes. They are beyond distracting and the opposite of immersive.

A wonderful version of the first Kate book

I've read all the Kate books and loved this version of Kate and crew. Voice actors all felt a right fit. Only dissapointment is one scene where the characters talk over themselves when not supposed to (corwin interview scene)

Yes!!!!! Exactly what I needed

I love this story, but I've always struggled with the previous audio narration. Kate in the books didn't annoy me, but that Kate did.
With this adaption, Kate is the Kate I heard in my head when reading!!!!! the various accents that the cast display dont feel forced, never did I feel as though I was hearing a regional accent be butchered, though yes some take a moment to adjust to.

Well worth the listen!!! looking forward to the next House Andrews adaption from Graphic Audio!!!!

meh.....

I've really tried to keep an open mind, and the story is good it just the narrator. kate's lost some of that emotion that made me fall for her, and doolittle doesn't sound the least bit southern, names mixed up, and accents keep dropping and picking up. honestly, it's not as bad as I'm making it, and I'm still gonna finish it. I just feel like it could've been better. but I love the idea of the dramatised version. although the random music that sometimes comes on in the background is a little distracting. finally, curan just doesn't have that charm anymore he just seems like a bipolar brute to me.

Issue with the recording

UPDATED AND CORRECTED VERSION COMING VERY SOON The Graphic Audio productions of the Innkeeper Chronicles are excellent, but there are three points in this recording where the sound engineering is stuffed and characters are talking over each other. There was a choice of a South Asian type music whilst an Irish sounding character was talking in an American setting and it just didn't make sense and took me out of the story. I cannot recommend this recording whilst there are mistakes in it. A reengineered update is required. The story and the extras are amazing - it's Ilona Andrews so of course the book is amazing.

love it - a new experience for an old favourite

I wasnt sure about trying this - a new version of an old favourite - until a friend recommended them. I'm so glad he did! it was like experiencing it anew in 3D. the sound effects made the scenes so much more vivid. Some of the voices were slightly different to what i imagined but quickly became the characters. if you're a fan of the series, I can't recommend it enough!

Love the Graphic Audio version!

That book is the best, voices are fantastic.
Only small issue, as mentioned before that interrogation scene has audio issues, please look into it Audible!
