Der Mitinhaber des Pharmakonzerns Josset & Virieu hat sich der Polizei gestellt – Adrien Josset wird verdächtigt, seine Frau ermordet zu haben. Der Grund? Josset hat eine junge Geliebte und deren Vater versprochen, sie zu heiraten. Doch im Verhör am Quai des Orfèvres beteuert er vehement seine Unschuld. Maigret ist versucht, Josset zu glauben, zumal bei den Ermittlungen des Untersuchungsrichters offenbar einiges unter den Teppich gekehrt wird.
