Editorial Reviews

This is the story of teenaged Simon ben Eleazar and his life among the Jewish refugees on Masada in the first century. Simon's tragic story is told in a series of first-person narrations that describe his troubles, hopes, and dreams, alternating with dispatches from Flavius Silva, commander of the Roman legion attempting to breach the fortress. Although this is a vivid tale rich in historical detail, the tone is somewhat stilted and old-fashioned, which could make it a tough sell to the teenagers of today. Nevertheless, performer Josh Hurley's clear voice is a great fit for the brave protagonist, and listeners will find his recreations of Simon's life memorable.
