Publisher's Summary

Penguin presents the audiobook edition of Matilda by Roald Dahl, read by Kate Winslet.

'So Matilda's strong young mind continued to grow, nurtured by the voices of all those authors who had sent their books out into the world like ships on the sea. These books gave Matilda a hopeful and comforting message: You are not alone.'

Matilda is the world's most famous bookworm, no thanks to her ghastly parents.

Her father thinks she's a little scab. Her mother spends all afternoon playing bingo.

And her headmistress, Miss Trunchbull?

She's the worst of all.

She's a big bully, who thinks all her pupils are rotten and locks them in the dreaded Chokey.

Despite these beastly grownups trying to push her down, Matilda is an extraordinary girl with a magical mind.

And she's had enough.

So all the terrible adults had better watch out, because she's going to teach them a lesson they'll never forget!

Kate Winslet's award-winning and varied career has included standout roles in Titanic, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Finding Neverland, Revolutionary Road and The Reader, for which she won the Academy Award for Best Actress. Also a highly acclaimed voice artist, she received the Grammy Award for Best Spoken Word Album for Children for Listen to the Storyteller.

Sit back and allow the words to wash around you

It’s not easy to pigeonhole a work of Roald Dahl’s into one genre, but if I had to, I’d say this is a dark comedy. It’s about a precocious child named—spoiler alert—Matilda. Matilda loves to read… so much that she can give Belle or Hermione Granger a run for their money. I always adore characters like that

The conflict of the story arises from the fact that her parents and her headmistress at school are astonishingly incapable of seeing how gifted she is. The principal in particular is a caricature that sometimes feels overdone. Still, Matilda has allies as well, most notably her teacher Ms Honey; and the story has quite a few welcome surprises up its sleeve.

I won’t go into actual spoiler territory. But considering this book is one of Dahl’s bestselling works and has been turned into a movie AND a musical, the story is famous enough that you probably know Matilda becomes even more special as the narrative progresses. I’ll just say that it’s a delightful book with a gratifying ending.

Now for the best part about this version: I don’t know how they got a star of Kate Winslet’s caliber to narrate this audiobook, but I’m glad they did. She elevates the material quite a bit. Her voices are superb, and she does a lot of fun accents. It’s uncanny how she can make herself sound like a kid. I especially liked the slightly Scottish inflections she gave to Miss Honey—it was adorable.

TL;DR - It’s a short listen with an uncomplicated and entertaining plot. Kate's voice is music to the ears. It’s a tad pricey, sure, but I believe it was worth my time and money.

Fantastic story and narration is excellent!!

We absolutely loved this audio book!!! Myself, my kids and even my husband got so carried away with the story on our long road trip, we couldn’t stop listening!
The way the story was narrated by Kate Winslet made it even more brilliant! I am sure it wouldn’t have been the same if someone else read the story.
It is a MUST listen! We were very sad when we finished the book.

Great first audio book!

This is my first audio book. Even though I had read matilda and watched the movie many times, it is beautiful every time I read it. Also , the narration was done beautifully. Still, if I could change a few bits, some parts were read too softly. Other than that, it was perfect!(^o^)b
I highly recommend it.

Hail Queen Kate, the best reader ever!!!

A subversive and hilarious story, a lovable phenomenon of a girl, her teacher and awful parents and school mistress. Winslet is everyone with aplomb, wit and an incredible voice range: at the same time the cruel Miss Trunchbull and Hortensia, the clever trickster. I heard many parts three or four times. Lovely, lovely experience. Dahl would have been satisfied, I am sure.

Absolutely brilliant

Kate Winslet is an absolute gem and performs the characters with real charm and talent. I’ve always loved this story but her performance brought the story to life in a really special way. So many parts had me absolutely laughing my head off (especially the insults and the children aspiring to rebel against Trunchbulls regime!). I think this is the best audio book on here. Really touching moments too. Loved it!

What's not to love?

What did you like most about Matilda?

I love every bit of the book. It's thoroughly entertaining and Kate Winslet was spectacular.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Matilda?

Several. I love Mrs Trunchball's encounter in class with smart Nigel 'unless-you-want my-middle-name' Hicks; the part where Lavender put the newt in her cup of water, and of course Matilda.

I think this is the best of Roald Dahl's books.

What about Kate Winslet’s performance did you like?

Everything, she made all the parts come to life.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I laughed all the way through.

Any additional comments?

My children also loved it.

7YR OLD STEP-GRAND DAUGHTER'S 1ST AUDIO BOOK

I gave Matilda (the book) and the audio book along with an iPod to my 7 yr old step-granddaughter for Christmas. She knew the story of Matilda but didn't have the book herself so I thought I would get her both the book and the audio book too. It was her first experience with an audio book and I encouraged her to read-along with the book and audio. She loved it. She said the lady (Kate Winslet) reading the story to her is very good and her voice is lovely. I think audio books, along with the physical book is a great way to encourage children to read. Hopefully she'll be like me and love her audio books and have a vast collection like I do.

Matilda truly is Magic

What a joy! What a delight! The imagery of the former Olympian hammer-throwing school principal Trunchball swinging that poor child by the objectionable pigtails around the classroom & out through the window was hilarious. Kate Winslet vocal representation of each character is divine. Her midland accents & energetic delivery of so many variations is outstanding & astounding. Matilda was the best healing for a hospital stay for both child & adult. Not to be missed& so well produced.

The best combination

The story is as perfect as always, but the thing that shines the most is Kate Winslet's accent work. Every character is distinct, and each character accent does not bleed into the narrator's voice at all. I finally understand why Kate Winslet has like eight Oscar nominations, I really understand now.

Exceptional story however a little hard to listen to. Parts were softly spoken, while other parts were too loud, not her best performance.
