NATO-piloterne Ylva Nordahl og John Evans skal tværs over den iskolde russiske tundra til fods – med fjenden i hælene – for at komme til Norge og forhindre den ultimative katastrofe.

Forholdet mellem Rusland og NATO er på frysepunktet, og NATO afholder sin største øvelse nogensinde i Finnmark. Ylva og John havner i deres F-16-fly i en konfrontation med et russisk fly og bliver skudt ned. Det udløser en storpolitisk krise, og det eneste, der kan forhindre, at konflikten optrappes, er, at Ylva og John når tilbage til Norge og afslører, hvad der egentlig skete i luftrummet. Det bliver en kamp med tiden, hvor både Ruslands præsident, chefen for NATO og den private militærindustri støder sammen.

På sin flugt gennem den vilde og smukke arktiske tundra opdager Ylva, at hverken John eller dem, hun stoler på, viser sig at være det, de udgiver sig for.

Grethe Bøe (f. 1971) er filmskaber og forfatter, og hun står bag en lang række prisbelønnede film og tv-serier. Mayday er hendes debutroman.
