Publisher's Summary

A balanced account of game changes, conflicts and ambitions. The fall from popular grace of the previously adulated brother of the heir to the British throne as a consequence of his marriage to a beautiful and dynamic Hollywood starlet of colour makes for fascinating listening in best-selling royal author Lady Colin Campbell's balanced account.

Lady Colin knows her royal history and psychology, and as the first seven years of her adult life were spent in the USA, she has a foot in both the American and British camps. With unique breadth of insight she goes behind the scenes, speaking to friends, relations, courtiers, and colleagues on both sides of the Atlantic to reveal the most unexpected royal story since the Abdication.

She highlights the dilemmas involved and the issues that lurk beneath the surface, as to why the couple decided to step down as senior royals. She analyses the implications of the actions of a young and ambitious couple in love with each other and with the empowering lure of fame and fortune.

She leads the listener through the maze of contradictions, revealing how Californian culture has influenced the couple's conduct. She exposes how they tried and failed to change the royal system by adapting it to their own needs and ambitions and, upon failing, how they decided to create a new system altogether.

Fabulously insighful

This is a wonderful recounting of the whole Harry and Meghan debacle seen from the perspective of British aristocracy. Lady Colin Campbell is an insider, and she has a very insightful take on the truth of British press, royalty and aristocracy. It lays out the facts the way more discerning members of the public have seen it, whether it was Diana’s subtle manipulation of the press, Harry’s sudden change into a grumpus or Meghan’s obvious resemblances to Wallis, without sugarcoating things in what can only be described as a very British way of seeing things. Princess Diana, Meghan and Princess Michael of Kent are dragged over the coals, but the accounts are not fiction. There have been other accounts to corroborate what Lady Campbell is talking about. And for once, a true and accurate description of the wily Queen Mother. She was a great woman, yes, but not a saint. Overall, a great listen, honest and unadulterated, from the vantage point of someone on the inside.

A monarchist Viewpoint

I found the author highly prejudiced against Meghan Markle and sprinkled throughout the book a certain antagonism in subtle but definite ways against her. Her views about the Princess Diana were also extremely appalling. What truly shocked me was her blatant ignoring of Prince Charles' affair with Camilla Parker Bowles and instead slandering Diana in a most heinous manner.
