La jeune Hekla, par un beau jour de l'année 1963, débarque de sa campagne à Reykjavik. Elle veut devenir écrivaine. Elle aime le plus beau garçon de son bled, Jon John, un garçon pas comme les autres, qui veut devenir costumier de théâtre. Hekla et Jon, deux êtres sensibles, prisonniers de leurs conditions, de femme pour elle, d'homosexuel pour lui, devront patienter pour réaliser leurs aspirations créatives, dans un pays contre toute attente conservateur, du moins dans les années 60. Comme dit la maman de Hekla, il faut "porter en soi un chaos... pour pouvoir mettre au monde une étoile qui danse."
