About this listen

Darkness lives within . . .

Now a major Netflix film, No One Gets Out Alive is the ultimate haunted house thriller from horror writer Adam Nevill. Winner of the August Derleth Award.

‘Fast becoming Britain's answer to Stephen King’ – The Guardian

Cash-strapped, working for agencies and living in shared accommodation, Stephanie Booth feels she can fall no further. So when she takes a new room at the right price, she believes her luck has finally turned. But 82 Edgware Road is not what it appears to be.

It’s not only the eerie atmosphere of the vast, neglected house, or the disturbing attitude of her new landlord, Knacker McGuire, that makes her uneasy – it’s the whispers behind the fireplace, the scratching beneath floors, the footsteps in the dark, and the young women weeping in neighbouring rooms. And when Knacker’s cousin Fergal arrives, the danger goes vertical.

But this is merely a beginning, a gateway to horrors beyond Stephanie’s worst nightmares. And in a house where no one listens to the screams, will she ever get out alive?

Critic Reviews

Adam Nevill has forged his reputation as one of the UK’s best horror writers by writing elegantly stripped down, deceptively simple novels. No One Gets Alive starts off as a similarly pared-back take on the ghost story, but blossoms into something much grander in scale
Stephanie is submerged in abject terror, bouncing from mundane despair to supernatural fright so quickly that the reader becomes disoriented – a sensation that only enhances the suspense . . . a reading experience fraught with real chills
A macabre, otherworldly tale of a young woman swallowed whole and alive by the horror that refused to be sated
This great big anvil of horror lands hard from the get-go
A fantastically cool read from start to finish, this author makes you turn on your lights and keep reading; a bit of an increase to the electric bill seeing as there are over six hundred pages in this unforgettable story. But if there were six stars to be given instead of five, this one deserves them!
Written with an almost elegiac elegance, and a profound insight into the lives of those on the miserable fringes of society, this is a gripping, gruesome bone-chiller with resonant themes, a supernatural edge and an overwhelming sense of malevolence. Read it if you dare . . . but preferably not during the hours of darkness!
A menacing novel that gets under your skin and stays there
Adam Nevill’s No One Gets Out Alive will chill you straight through to the core – a cold, merciless, fear-inducing nightmare to the last page. A word of caution, don’t read this one in the dark
Brutal, shocking, scary and unnerving, No One Gets Out Alive is the best haunted house story I have read in long time
Deeply psychological and harrowing, it’s an unforgettable study of cruelty that has plenty of surprises up its sleeve and drags you right to hell and back with it (Matthew Fryer)
Nevill’s work is extremely dark and very often brutal. It’s utterly mesmerizing, you want to look away but you can’t
Verdict: a terrifying story of violence and the supernatural that deals with a monstrous evil rooted in the past. 9/10
That Nevill managed to sustain dread throughout a novel of this size is a true accomplishment, as this book throws horror at the readers from the very first paragraph and doesn’t let up until the end. If you’re a fan of horror and Adam Nevill isn’t on your radar, you’re doing something wrong
Once again we have a dark and disturbing tale from the pen of Adam Nevill, and it’s one which took me on a rollercoaster ride.
This here novel definitely comes as a cautionary tale: read the small print of your contract. More so, insist on a contract. And don’t move into the first place on offer. Small Claims Courts cannot fight hell
One of the most scary and emotionally hard-hitting horror novels of recent times (James Everington)
