Lucia vive vicino Cassino, insieme ai suoi fratelli. Quando i tedeschi in ritirata occupano Pietravairano, papà Marco si nasconde con tutta la famiglia, nella fattoria di zio Alfredo che però, poco dopo, sarà arrestato dai nazisti.
La gente impaurita cerca rifugio sui monti e la famiglia di Lucia, insieme a molti altri profughi, viene ospitata dai monaci che però non vogliono saperne di Gegè, il fedele porcellino.
Nonostante le bombe, la fame e le malattie, i bambini trovano comunque il modo di continuare a sorridere. Poi, finalmente, arrivano gli americani, la polvere di piselli, la cioccolata e lui, Cialì.
