Publisher's Summary

A full-cast dramatisation of Neil Gaiman's magical retellings of the Norse myths, inviting us into a world of gods and monsters, tricks and trust, fiery endings and new beginnings.

'And the game begins anew…'

Meet the trickster god Loki and his astonishing children - the giant wolf Fenrir, Jormungundr the snake that encircles the world, and Hel, the little girl who grows up to be Queen of the dead. Here, too, is Odin the all-father, who sacrificed his eye to see the future; Thor the thunderer, who defends Asgard with his fearsome strength and mighty hammer; and Freya the understandably angry, most beautiful of the gods and always being gambled for by unwanted suitors.

From the beginning of the universe in fire and ice, to the very end of the world, Ragnarok, these enthralling tales of gods, goddesses, dwarves and giants bring the ancient myths to vigorous life.

Diana Rigg, Derek Jacobi, Colin Morgan, Natalie Dormer and Neil Gaiman himself are among the stellar cast in these spellbinding stories of old betrayals - and new hope.

What a journey!!

My boy of 13 thoroughly enjoyed it on a car ride. He opined, ‘a drab ride turned into a theatre’.

Fabulous!

This radio production adds just the right balance of humour and dramatics to bring the myths successfully off the page. Great acting and editing. Hats off to the BBC.

Like listening to a well-acted movie.

Fantastic throughout. Diana Rigg does a wonderful job (as always), and the rest of the cast is equally impressive. Norse mythology is one of the more interesting mythos to get into and this is a great introduction to such. It is quite short, when compared to other audiobooks on this site, but well-worth a listen regardless!

Get the original.

I bought this as my first book. Didn't realise the original existed.
It's OK. But short

Norse book review

This story is really good in terms of connection with people of the world, and it gives a better understanding of human nature.

Really enjoyable and informative

I love the way the tales of Norse Mythology are told from the point of view of an old woman telling them to a child. The voices of the characters are perfect and bring the tales to life. Highly recommend!!

Good stories and well acted, just rather short

Well presented and spoken and all are interesting stories.
Well known and able actors in many of the roles.
It is however very short in length, as it was originally created for BBC Radio 4 hourly story slots.
Therefore, I'd buy it as a standard purchase, over 'wasting' a monthly credit?

Great story telling time for children

All be it my 5month of son, Ragnar son of Ryan felt captured by this audible book one of which I have read and felt worthy of listening too as we try to calm our child without the constant brainwashing of kids TV. This was great to play on loudspeaker throughout the house and a well worthy listen.

Brilliant!

I don't think they get better than this. The cast is great and the story's are timeless.

Very good dramatisation not all the stories

A very good performance and convincing company. They just missed a couple of my favourites stories from both the Neil Gaiman book and tweaked some to minimise the number of characters in a story.

A wonderful introduction to the Nordic mythology

A well presented adaptation of the myths collected in the book. A great version to introduce kids to the tales.

Quite short

This was a very short adaptation which, while having higher production value, is outshone by other performances of the same material.
