Nach der Sache mit Kirkland liegt Jackson Payne schwer verletzt im Krankenhaus, doch die Sache ist ausgestanden und er in Sicherheit. Lydia Frost hofft, dass nun endlich wieder etwas Normalität in die Agentur kommt. Helen plant eine Geburtstagsparty und Dr. Baxter versucht, den mechanischen Arm nachzubauen.

Die ruhigen Tage dauern allerdings nicht lange an. Eine Mutter bittet Frost, ihren verschollenen Sohn, David, zu suchen, da Scotland Yard sich nicht dafür zu interessieren scheint. Frost nimmt den Auftrag an, doch sie hat nicht viel Hoffnung, den Jungen nach all der Zeit noch zu finden. Sie ahnt nicht, dass er der Schlüssel zu den mechanischen Kindern ist.

Der Mörder erweitert derweil das Spielfeld. Er hat eine ganz spezielle Geburtstagsüberraschung geplant...
