Awesome narration
The starting is a little irritating, but the book picks up the pace and I enjoyed listening to it. The Occultist class is one of the highlights of the book and the narrator did a fantastic job.

I took a rare blind leap on this one...
If you’re like me, you’re a big fan of the GameLit genre, but you’re regularly disappointed by how often extremely subpar audiobooks are given unreasonably high ratings.
For me this means that I am very careful when spending my credits on LitRPG titles. I read through (and mostly ignore) all the 5 star reviews and try to discern from the negative reviews whether the book deserves its inevitable 4.x overall rating.
Even then I have to make sure I don’t end up accidentally getting ear-violated by a 13-year-old’s, inane, pornographic fantasy loosely dressed in GameLit clothing (coughs, Schinhofen)...
Which is why it’s so rare that I’d take a chance on an unknown author whose kindle book hasn’t even been reviewed on amazon yet. But I was in a gambling mood, and the audio clip convinced me to give it a chance.
I will fully admit that my 5 star rating is probably artificially inflated by how surprised I was to hear a well-written and professionally narrated audiobook.
This book is not on the level of The Land or Videogame Plotline Tester, but it is an above average LitRPG audiobook with an MC who both acts his age and also avoids describing every female character as “soooo hot!” It also has a very good “real world” motivation and storyline for the MC to have a stake in the game-world.
In the end, the author could surely find a way to turn this into a series, but it is written as a standalone novel without loose ends and forward looking plot lines. The book is completely self contained. Oddly enough, this may make it less satisfying for those who are used to the minimum 3 volume storylines that are almost ubiquitous in the genre.
That said it’s definitely worth a credit, and if this is the author’s first published book, I’m very much looking forward to seeing how his writing develops in the future.

A solid story, 3's aren't bad.
The author's passion and creativity flare up way more when he's penning for game and action scenes. This led to a really good book with long stretches of me not caring as he finds a spot to bed down irl. A solid 4 litRPG novel and a sad 2 of a homelife drama, averages out to a 3 overall. I get that characters need motivation but having that motivation take you out of the meat and potatoes of the story is jarring and unwelcome.
The narrator annoyed me for the first hour, constant vocal fry grates at my nerves. I muscled through and after that first hour I found myself somewhat impressed. The vocal fry still managed to annoy me in starts and fits but with projecting emotion and differing certain voices he pulled it off very well. Needs work on differentiating female voices though, beyond that solid work!
An averagely good book, which makes it a standout amongst litRPG.

Part predictable, part unexpected, all great fun!
I've been in a run of decent but not exceptional litRPG stories lately, so this was really a refreshing change. No excessive swearing, no cringey romance. Just a fun adventure that, though largely predictable, did end up surprising me more than once. I wavered between giving it four or five stars, but in the end I just had so much *fun* I have to give it full marks.
As a 1.99 upgrade from kindle, the audio was absolutely worth the price. I loved it. I certainly look forward to seeing what else this author can do. Can't wait for more!

wow, just. wow
This book has everything I look for in a good audible book and I theroly enjoyed every part of it. I won't give away any of it because I would be doing a disservice to the people that haven't had a chance to listen yet. I'll tell you to pay attention to details in the beginning and threw out because the author pulls everything together quit nicely and the ending ripped out my funny bone and tickled me with it untill I couldn't stop laughing. I mean, talk about a twist..... twists, plural, multiple, both funny, unexpected and serious and exactly how to end a book!!. No cliff hangers! I am a truck driver and listen to books on the road to pass time, but when I got the last 3hours of this book, I couldn't stop listening. I listened all the way home and sat down on my couch not even bothering to turn on the lights on the way through the door and was oblivious to the world untill the book was done.
I want to thank the author for writing this book and the amazing job the narrator did! Amazing on all characters 🙌👌

One of the few Lit.RPG worth it.
What can I say.. I've been refunded a bunch of litRPG books before. This is a keeper. There have been a few that I have tried but couldn't even get halfway through, and even a few that I completed and still wanted a refund.
This one isn't any of those, so get it if you like litRPG or are opened minded toward fantasy sci-fi crossovers but on a pc scale.

Just another Teen Book
I don't know how or why this book got so many 5 star ratings, it does not deserve it. This is not some Young Adult book, not even close. It's a Teen book. Where the MC thinks he knows best at every corner and doesn't listen to the AI trying to give him advice. Inept government agents trying to track him down or don't know how to because it's very easy because I do it all the time. Step 1 track down the location of where he uploaded the videos. Step two, kill all his accounts, Step three, no competition no nothing. Don't get me started on these ridiculous game mechanics that lets a single player level that fast or the idiotic guilds that cant kill one guy solo over and over again. The character is just a huge Larry Sue, where the the author drops crap in his lap to get the I WIN card.

Good solid book
I’m looking forward to the sequel for this one and in inter to see if it will do as well as this one or be a complete flop. This right now is a great stand alone story. I just hope the author can do as well with the sequel as he did here.

Sun Tzu could take lessons from this kid.
What a wonderful read. 15 hours flew by. It is not often Sci-Fi can make you laugh, cry and set on the edge of your seat. I am amazed by the gauntlet of emotions this book brought out of me. A young boy of 16 is faced with grown up problems. He is hounded by authorities and faces choices I would never want to face. If you are new to the lit-RPG style of books, let this be your first read. I don't often feel the need to write a review, but I just hope we can keep this author writing. 50 years I have been a fan of SCI-FI, and sometimes you just know that a series is going to be a smash hit. Don't let this one slip by your reading list. I am going to give it a week and listen to it again. There is just so much going on that I know I missed some of it. It is five am, I just finished it in one setting and I am still laughing. When you read this book, you will laugh also. Have fun, I did...!

Excellent
if you enjoy online or role playing games you will enjoy this book, the character balances gaming with life with enough plot twists to keep you wanting to know what's next. The narration is excellent with enough variety in voices to keep the story realistic. I loved this book and definitely looked out for more by both the author and narrator

generic wrapped in the cloth type if crpg
The book unfortunately uses every trope you can imagine to move the story along.
I won't go into detail as not to spoil, but I felt the story was stale and generic.
plot devices are unreasonable, plot solutions overly unrealistic and the characters not well fleshed out. in some situations the main character is a complete moron but he continuesly happens to take actions and happen upon situations that are extremely fortunate and beyond unlikely to happen.
The premise of the book is cool, but to me it fails to deliver any meaningful story or emotional impact for me.

MMO AT ITS GREATEST
This has to be one of the best things I have read in ages, I love gaming and this captured the best and worst of the genre,
with a sad heart I have to say good bye to the character as it seems to have all converged to end without a window of a sequel however this doesn't mean you shouldn't read this but to the contrary, that you will want more to the very end. Great Book Great Writing ☆☆☆☆☆ 5Stars from me

A nice (dark) surprise
As with many books during the past 12 months of COVID affected extra reading, I took a punt on this without doing any due diligence because it popped up in recommendations both on GR and Kindle/Audible even though LitRPG isn't really 'my thing'. Well, I wasn't disappointed...
Set late in the 21st century where the rich/poor gap seems to have widened, our MC Damian is a 16 year old schoolboy who has managed to become a beta tester for 'Saga Online' with free VR gear and a 'handler' from the company. Having been summoned for his evening meal, his handler drops a last minute bombshell test for him to stand in for the games most popular social media personality. He takes the expected beating, but his handler calls his Mom to talk her round and this results in her suffering a heart attack and being hospitalised. He then discovers his substitute appearance has gone viral but the authorities want him put in care resulting in him going on the run in an attempt to win a streaming competition that would pay for his mothers healthcare requirements. A bit convoluted (and far fetched) but it does set the stage nicely for what ensues.
So, scene set, this is split nicely between game time and efforts to avoid the real life authorities along with how Damian learns from experiences in both worlds, finds some harsh realities and surprise allies in his quests. The usual stats commentary is kept to a minimum which always pleases me in LitRPG and the story is both neatly wrapped up for standalone readers and left open for further world exploration.
So, a big thumbs up (especially for a first novel), and time to go find the follow up now...
Oh, and I wasn't previously aware of Adam Sims as a narrator but thoroughly enjoyed his work.

Listen to it in one sitting!
Occultist starts in-game with a new Virtual Reality MMO (VR-MMORPG) in the near future with a 16-year-old trying to balance his gaming and real-life stuff. I can’t go to what happened but wow! The roller-coaster ride Mr Mayes takes the reader on is amazing. The rich MMO with a dictatorial feel of an over-corporatized real world and a touch of viral social media sets the stage for many complications for the MC, Damien.
Being taken on a non-stop exciting adventure which spans both realities was brilliant. I could not help yelling my encouragement to Damien as he jumps through the muddy plot created by Mr Mayes.
Two surprising supporting characters are two AI’s in the MMO, Bartholomew and Noigel. I would love to go into why they are both so fabulous, but you will have to read the book (it is a little spoilery).
Just like to also shout out to the narrator, Adam Sims. He gave birth to this amazing book. I had many chuckles as he superbly narrated this book.
All I can say it is, if you love World of Warcraft or Dungeons and Dragons or love a good fantasy novel then this book is for you!

A Great story and fun characters.
I wanted to start with the major negative I found with this audiobook - Simply put; the narrator is not very good, often with questionable pronunciations and even worse emphasis and emotion in certain places. It often ruined certain scenes as the narrator clearly goes against what the narrative is trying to portray. He is often monotone and I found is ruined the story.
Other than the performance, I really enjoyed the story and liked the characters and personalities and highly recommend the book to anyone interested in a satisfying revenge story.

decently entertaining
pretty much what you would expect from this sort of novel, 15 hours of entertainment based around a fictional (and unrealistic) virtual reality rpg. if you enjoy this sort of novel then it's worth listening to, if not then probably don't bother. there's nothing overly new or game changing, just a decently written story.
