Orwell arriva a Barcellona con l'intenzione di scrivere reportage per i lettori inglesi, ma la situazione è talmente esaltante che decide di unirsi ai combattimenti. Sul fronte può contare solo su un fucile del 1896. In compenso lo sostiene uno straordinario amore per le persone e le idee per cui sta combattendo.
