Spannende Geschichte und politische Streitschrift – Harriet Beecher-Stowe (1811-1896) veröffentlichte Onkel Toms Hütte im Jahre 1852 zuerst als Fortsetzungsgeschichte in einer Zeitung in Washington. Als das erste Kapitel vor über 150 Jahren veröffentlich wurde, löste es außerordentlich heftige Reaktionen aus. Wurde doch der amerikanischen Gesellschaft in den Südstaaten erbarmungslos ein Spiegel vorgehalten, in dem nackte Gewalt und die Barbarei der Sklaverei zu besichtigen waren. Die Spirituals "Nobody Knows The Trouble I See" und "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" singt Manfred Krug.
