Onkel Wanja, eigentlich Iwan Petrwitsch Wojnizkij, lebt mit seiner nicht allzu hübschen Nichte Sonja auf dem Gut seiner verstorbenen Schwester und betreibt dieses schuldenfrei. Er unterstützt finanziell die Karriere von Sonjas Vater, dem Kunstprofessor Serebrjakow. Aufgrund des teuren Stadtlebens verlässt Serebrjakow mit Eintritt in den Ruhestand die Stadt und zieht mit seiner neuen Ehefrau Jelena auf das Gut. Sowohl Wanja als auch dessen befreundeter Arzt Astrow, in den seine Nichte verliebt ist, werfen ein Auge auf Jelena. Serebrjakow vermisst aber das Stadtleben und möchte das Gut verkaufen. Aufgrund dessen sowie die Eifersucht in Bezug auf Jelena kommt es zwischen Wanja und Serebrjakow zum Eklat, der mit einer Schießerei endet...
