கஸ்தூரி ஸ்ரீனிவாசன்' விருது பெற்ற இந்த நாவலில் ஆசிரியர் மூன்று காலகட்டங்களில் நடக்கும் மூன்று விதமான கதைகள் கொண்டது.  

In the seventh century the Cholas are vassals of the Pallavas. Parthiban conveys his dream of the Chola dynasty regaining its glory - which he believes is lost since they are no longer the independent rulers - to his young son Vikraman. Parthiban refuses to pay tribute to the Pallavas, triggering a battle in which Parthiban is killed. Before he dies, on the battlefield, an enigmatic monk promises Parthiban that he will make sure that Vikraman fulfills Parthiban's dream. 

ராஜாஜி பக்தர் கல்கி என்பது பலருக்கும் தெரியும். ஆனால் ராஜாஜியுடன் சரிநிகர் சமானமாகப் பேசி வாதம் புரியும் உரிமை பெற்ற மிகச் சிலருள் கல்கி ஒருவர் என்பது பெரும்பாலோருக்குத் தெரியாது. 

'பாண்டி மாதேவி' என்னும் இந்த நாவலை எழுதுவதற்கு இரண்டு மூன்று ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்னால் ஒரு அற்புதமான காலைப்போதில் கன்னியாகுமரிக் கடற்கரையில் வீற்றிருந்தேன்.   

In Tamil: Ponniyin Selvan is widely considered by many to be the greatest novel ever written in Tamil literature. It was first published as a series in the Kalki, a Tamil language magazine, during the 1950s and was later integrated into a novel. The craze for the series, which was published weekly, was such that it elevated the magazine circulation to reach a staggering figure of 71,366 copies - no mean achievement in a newly independent India. 

ஒரு நல்ல பத்திரிகையாளனாக வர வேண்டும் என்கிற எளிய லட்சியத்துடன் சென்னை வரும் கதாநாயகனுக்கு ஒரு அரசியல்வாதியின் அறிமுகம் கிடைக்கிறது. 

புதுமைப்பித்தனின் சிறுகதைகள் தான் அவருக்கு எழுத்துலகில் தனி இடத்தை அளித்தன. 

காதலர்கள் பிரியலாம். கணவன் மனைவிகூட டிவோர்ஸ் செய்யலாம். ஆனால் அப்பா அம்மா பிரியவோ.. டிவோர்ஸ் செய்யவோ கூடாது. 

ஒருத்தி மகனாய் பிறந்து இன்னொருத்தி மகனாய் வளர்ந்து பின் யாருமின்றி பிரிந்து தனியாக கலங்கி தோள் கொடுத்த காதலியின் மடி சாய்ந்தான் தலைவன். 

அன்பும் கனிவும் கொண்ட மனதின் உணர்வு காதல். ஆண் பெண் ஈர்ப்பு அல்ல அது என்று தன் செயல்கள் மூலம் உணர்த்துகிறாள் பவானி.
