Pearl Harbor era una delle più importanti basi americane nel Pacifico. Il 7 dicembre 1941, però, si trasformò in un inferno di fuoco e fumo, sotto un micidiale bombardamento durato due ore. Quel bombardamento era l'inusuale dichiarazione di guerra dei giapponesi, il loro biglietto da visita: nel fumo nero degli incendi, che avevano devastato quel paradiso tropicale, si scorgeva la fisionomia di un nemico atroce e spietato.

Pearl Harbor rimane l'esempio di un'azione militare rapida e vittoriosa, incisiva, praticamente perfetta, nata dall'equilibrio tra un piano intelligente, preparato con pazienza e tenacia, e un'esecuzione impeccabile, contro un nemico superiore per forze; al tempo stesso, però, Pearl Harbor mostrò anche che in una guerra moderna una sola battaglia, per quanto importante, non può essere decisiva, se non è supportata dalla superiorità materiale, e da un disegno strategico vincente.
