In this short story from Guy de Maupassant, Montgomery expertly blends together indignation, pettiness, remorse, and parsimoniousness for the character of Madame Lefevre, a wealthy but miserly widow who buys a dog - the eponymous Pierrot - after someone has stolen onions from her garden. However, Madame Lefevre is disappointed in Pierrot and throws him down a well. Montgomery unflinchingly narrates the series of events that follow, never flinching away from de Maupassant's satirical look at the bourgeoisie.
