Learn about the game of Poker with iMinds insightful knowledge series. Poker is a family of card games, first popularised in the United States, and now played throughout the world. Traditionally played with a deck of fifty-two cards, it has many rule variations and is played at both amateur and professional levels. Regarded by many as a game of equal parts luck and skill, poker is a mainstay of modern popular culture. The game we now know as poker developed in the United States sometime in the early eighteenth century. The city of New Orleans is considered the birthplace of poker. At the time, New Orleans was a culturally diverse trade port, inviting a mixture of sailors and merchants from around the world. It is likely that the game of poker evolved from similar card games from the Old World. Scholars argue over the exact game from which poker would have descended. The most common claims include French, German and even Persian card games.
