Very good

Had to stick with it for the first hour or so! Very glad I did. Very good story. Excellent narrator.
I'm looking forward to the next in the series. I could be hooked on these!

OK but not much of a plot.

I am amazed this series went on to sell millions. It is full of cardboard characters and has a tissue thin plot line.

Won't bother again

I can't understand how Patricia Cornwall has achieved such success. Nothing gripped me in this novel suffice to say I can't even recall most of it.
A different narrator may have improved things a tad as I found Lorelei's monotone drawl nothing short of irritating.

Exceptionally good audio book. Great story line.

Once I got into the Flow of it, couldn't put it down. Good book.

Chillingly good

Exceptional, not only is this a well crafted, imaginative piece of suspense but a fascinating insight into the real world of forensic pathology. I also appreciated the way Patricia Cornwell depicts the chauvinism of the time. She highlights sexist nuances that are generally overlooked, not always obvious but a gentle drip, drip that only women are used to. Hopefully male readers will see what I mean and be surprised, as it really is an invisible but constant presence in our lives. (Getting better over time).
The narration is great, reminds me of Kathleen Turner's VI Warshawski, soft hypnotic American in stark contrast to the brutal storyline.
This isn't for the faint hearted but it is thrilling so worth trying if you're unsure. I'm delighted to have found such a brilliant author amidst all the mediocrity.

Very nice book and perfect interpretation

Suspense up until the end and the narrator changes voices for every single character, she is impressive!

intriguing murder story

This is the first time I've read Patricia Cornwell and I plan to read more. A bit remeniscent if some if the Bones books and some of the writing is 'of its time', but it kept me gripped until the end. Lorelei King is great narrator.

Sadly DNF as I found the narration slow and irritating. The plot/story wasn't much better. Will be returned to Audible.

Well read

The narrator is great. Her voice is lovely to listen to and her accents aren't bad either! As this is the first in a long series of Scarpetta novels there's a lot of place and character introduction which slows the pace down a bit but still a very enjoyable listen.

Scarpetta Saves The Day!

Kay Scarpetta was my first strong female role model. I discovered Patricia Cornwell at about 15, and the Scarpetta stories inspired me to aim high and be independent. Listening to this audio book rekindled my love for the series. Lorelei did an amazing job performing this novel! I can't wait to listen to the next one!

lucy from southpark

the narrator is so good on all characters except Lucy...I simply cannot understand why she's elected to sound like a cartoon character, or like a character from southpark. It's so distracting, the ridiculous exaggerated high pitched tone. even children don't speak anything like this. the interpretation should have been a more subtle shift in intonation. It's almost comical. I'm thinking it's not the narrator's fault, she was probably unwisely directed to do this. the result is jarring and almost comical. I kept picturing a cat character in a cartoon, instead of an 8 or 10 year old child.

Dated and unexciting

Lots of dated computer lingo in parts which was as boring as listening to a 1990’s coding text book.
Characters were uninteresting and the plot fizzled. No twists and turns or surprises.

Enjoyable read.

Good read. Not too serious, a bit gory at times, but in context. I like the Doc, will be downloading the next book.
