Cruel. Coldblooded. Hades in a Brioni suit. Cillian Fitzpatrick has been dubbed every wicked thing on planet earth. To the media, he is The Villain. To me, he is the man who (reluctantly) saved my life. Now I need him to do me another small solid. Bail me out of the mess my husband got me into. What’s a hundred grand to one of the wealthiest men in America, anyway? Only Cillian doesn’t hand out free favors. The price for the money, it turns out, is my freedom.

Story
They say your first kiss should be earned. Mine was stolen by a devil in a masquerade mask under the black Chicago sky. They say the vows you take on your wedding day are sacred. Mine were broken before we left church. They say your heart only beats for one man. Mine split and bled for two rivals who fought for it until the bitter end. I was promised to Angelo Bandini, the heir to one of the most powerful families in the Chicago Outfit. Then taken by Senator Wolfe Keaton, who held my father’s sins over his head to force me into marriage.

Story
I have a simple plan. Finish Royal Elite School and get into my dream university. One glance from the school’s king blows my plan up in smoke. One glance and he suffocates my air. One glance and he issues his death sentence. His first words spiral my life into irreparable chaos. “I will destroy you.” Everything about Aiden King is black. Black mind. Black heart. Black soul. I should’ve remained quiet and endured the time I have left. I didn’t. I made the irrevocable mistake of provoking the king on his throne.

Story
I didn't mean to star in a sex tape, okay? It was just one of those unexplainable things. Like Stonehenge, Police Academy 2, and morning glory clouds. It just happened. Now, my ball-busting father is sentencing me to six months of celibacy, sobriety, and morbid boredom under the roof of Boston's nerdiest girl alive, Sailor Brennan. The virginal archer is supposed to babysit my ass while I learn to take my place in Royal Pipelines, my family's oil company. Little does she know, that's not the only pipe I'll be laying....

They call him The Mute for a reason. Hard, cold, and calculated, he rarely speaks. When he does, it's with disdain. When he does, his words aren't meant for me. When he does, my stomach flips and my world tilts on its axis. He is 33. I am 18. He's a single dad and my father's business partner. I'm just a kid to him and his enemy's daughter. He's emotionally unavailable. And I am...feeling. Feeling things I shouldn't feel for him. Trent Rexroth is going to break my heart. The writing isn't just on the wall, it's inked on my soul.

They say love and hate are the same feelings experienced under different circumstances, and it's true. The man who comes to me in my dreams also haunts me in my nightmares. He is a brilliant lawyer. Bane: Naked surfer. Habitual pothead. A con, a liar, a thief, and a fraud. Last I heard, he was extorting the rich and screwing their wives for a living. Which is why I’m more than a little surprised to find him at my threshold, looking for my friendship, my services, and most puzzling of all - looking humbled. Thing is, I’m on a boycott. Literally - cut boys from my life. Permanently. Problem is, Bane is not a boy, he is all man, and I’m falling, crashing, drowning in his sweet, perfect lies.

It started out like any normal day. Then the fender bender happened. The guy I collided with drove an expensive car and was drop-dead gorgeous. Too bad he was also a total jerk. We argued over whose fault it was and any other thing that came out of his condescending mouth. Eventually, the police came and we went our separate ways. The insurance companies would have to figure things out. I had a job interview to get to anyway - one I was excited about. Though that excitement changed to disappointment the moment the person interviewing me walked in. The guy from the accident.

They say that life is a beautiful lie and death a painful truth. They're right. No one has ever made me feel more alive than the guy who serves as a constant reminder that my clock is ticking. He is my forbidden, shiny apple. The striking fallacy to my blunt, raw, truth. He is also my sister's ex-boyfriend. One thing you should know before you judge me: I saw him first. I craved him first. I loved him first. Eleven years later, he waltzed into my life, demanding a second chance. Dean Cole wants to be my bronze horseman. Hopefully, he isn't too late.

Everyone says opposites attract. And they must be right, because there’s no logical reason why I’m so drawn to Colin Fitzgerald. I don’t usually go for tattoo-covered, video-gaming, hockey-playing nerd-jocks who think I’m flighty and superficial. His narrow view of me is the first strike against him. It doesn’t help that he’s buddy-buddy with my brother. And that his best friend has a crush on me. And that I just moved in with them. Oh, did I not mention we’re roommates?

In fifth grade my teacher set us up with pen pals from a different school. Thinking I was a girl, with a name like Misha, the other teacher paired me up with her student Ryen. My teacher, believing Ryen was a boy like me, agreed. It didn't take long for us to figure out the mistake. And in no time at all, we were arguing about everything. The best take-out pizza. Android vs. iPhone. Whether or not Eminem is the greatest rapper ever. For the next seven years, it was us. She's the only one who keeps me on track, talks me down, and accepts everything I am.

Publisher's Summary
We were supposed to be best friends....
But turned out to be worst enemies.
Penn
They say revenge is a dish best served cold.
I’d had four years to stew on what Daria Followhill did to me, and now my heart was completely iced.
I took her first kiss.
She took the only thing I loved.
I was poor.
She was rich.
The good thing about circumstances? They can change. Fast.
Now, I’m her parents’ latest shiny project. Her housemate. Her tormentor. The captain of the rival football team she hates so much.
Yeah, baby girl, say it - I’m your foster brother.
There’s a price to pay for ruining the only good thing in my life, and she’s about to shell out some serious tears.
Daria Followhill thinks she is THE queen. I’m about to prove to her that she’s nothing but a spoiled princess.
Daria
Everyone loves a good old, unapologetic punk.
But being a bitch? Oh, you get slammed for every snarky comment, cynical eye roll, and foot you put in your adversaries’ way.
The thing about stiletto heels is that they make a hell of a dent when you walk all over the people who try to hurt you.
In Penn Scully’s case, I pierced his heart until he bled out, then left it in a trash can on a bright summer day.
Four years ago, he asked me to save all my firsts for him.
Now he lives across the hall, and I want nothing more than to be his last everything.
His parting words when he gave me his heart were that nothing in this world is free.
Now? Now he is making me pay.

4 We're all human stars
I have to admit that I didn't like Daria going in. From what was mentioned of her in the previous series I thought she'd be awful. While she was queen bee and ugly most of the time, I felt her pain. Knowing what she felt and what she was going through I immediately understood her actions. Did that excuse her? No. But in the end we are all human.
I hope to get more of her and Penn. I fell in love with him too. When he was hurting I hurt too. He was a jerk but he had a lot of anger towards Daria. I'm just glad that he didn't give up on her or on himself.
Now Melody....yeah I've never been her biggest fan.
Narration
Female 4 stars, pacing was a little weird.
Male 5 stars, he was perfect for Penn.

I read series in reverse but this was a good audiobook! It’s a great high school/adult problem read. I enjoyed the rich girl poor boy angle but not the vindictiveness of a certain family member or the rich girl in the beginning.

Pretty good!
I actually enjoyed this book. I completed it in one day. I loved Daria’s evolution. She went from a selfish, heartless mean girl to a lovable, humbled woman. I found the story to be well executed. The book showed how much more difficult and destructive life can be when we let miscommunications, jealousy and envy fester and spread like cancer. I felt the emotions conveyed by the author and narrators. I felt the compassion, love and forgiveness of family and friends, the hatred of misguided, envious enemies, the heartbreak of unrequited love, a fathers revenge, the struggles of adolescence and the redemption of broken souls. I felt all of this and more in one pretty awesome story. well done!

Such a great book!!
Have you ever read a book and not be able to put it down? You skip sleep because you can’t not read the next sentence? This was that for me! I start this book at 11 o’clock at night and finished seven hours later! The drama, the personal growth, and the world building in this book are perfection! I have read one other book by this author and love that one too. I look forward to reading many more by L.J. Shen!

This one just cracked my heart wide open!
There’s something to be said when someone’s writing just reaches in and grasps your beating heart. Just completely takes hold, squeezing, until it bursts and then pieces you back together again. I’m in awe of L.J. Shen. I anticipated the greatness that is her writing but what I found was so much more. Daria Followhill and Penn Scully had me a complete mess, in the most satisfying way.

One of the best!
This book really touched and moved me at the same time. The characters in the book struggle - but with issues far from what you normally meet in romance novels. Therefore this story really caught me and I will definitely listen to the story again and go look for more from this auditor.
Furthermore, the author includes point of view from others charactors than the main two, adding further to the story. Really interesting story and totally captivating.

NOT THE HOTHOLES
I don't like this spin off. I was blown away by the Hotholes series and expected more than what I got from this story. The actual plot was too thin to warrant the amount of angst from the characters. The female narrator was terrible. The nuances in her delivery were annoying. Her speech was drawn out, over the top and not natural at all. Daria had absolutely no redeeming qualities. She was also written like she had a mental illness (bipolar, split personality, depression, etc.) with no mention of mental health issues. Hard to through.

I love a troubled angsty lead. I love the anti hero especially if its a female. but this chick is just mean for no reason. No redeeming qualities no reason to hope for her to get better of be rescued or to deserve the heart of the male lead. Just ugh. DNF

A great story with fantastic voice acting.
I didn't know how to categorise this story. YA or NA. Most of the characters are in their final year of high school and adults surrounding those students, but this is a dark romance, suspense and is a raw, angst filled tale that is too violent and sexually explicit to be a YA.
Having said that, this was such a good story. The angst and intensity made this a raw story of both love and hate. While Penn and Darla are the main focus of the book, there are so many other relevant characters and they are so well developed. The whole plot is so involved and so well written.
I cannot fault the narration by Angela Goethals, Maxine Mitchell, Michael Crouch. Their vocal talents give a voice and intensity to the story and bring it to life. This story requires proper voice acting and the narrators all delivered.

All the feels! One of Shen's best books to date!
Not sure I can do justice to how amazing this book really was. I devoured it so quick and now I am bereft. I love the characters. It was pure Shen magic. It is very difficult to capture the same magic when it comes to spin off series but honestly, she outdid herself with Pretty Reckless. Penn and Daria are not typical teenagers, there is so much depth to both of these characters. Shen is a master at making you feel for her characters and feel you will!!! All of the characters are flawed and human and so relatable and this to me is the best aspect of this book. This one would be reread many times over, for sure. Cannot wait for the rest for the series. Love love love LJ Shen and I wish she would write 100 hooks a year :) kidding... Not really :)

Not so guilty pleasure
I want to say this series is a guilty pleasure, because it’s raunchy and unapologetic, but I found myself telling everyone about it. The world she has created and the characters within it (even characters outside this series link in) are so rich and complex I was fully enthralled. On the surface it may be a dirty series complete with high-drama and high-angst that hits all the right notes for its genre, but it is so much more than that. Shen writes magically; at some point in each book in this series I genuinely sobbed, laughed out loud, and had to stop what I was doing because she pushed the story into a place I wasn’t expecting; un-afraid and again, unapologetic. Somehow I have never once cringed at her writing, which for its genre is shocking to me. The dialogue and the relationships between all of the characters is genuinely good; the clash and meshing of their personalities always precise and consistent, with Shen always leaving a good amount of room for them to banter. She writes each character so distinctly you can imagine them vividly.
The first book in the series focuses on the trope of the “mean girl/high school princess“, but joker style helps you to unpick and understand her and inevitably root for her. The way Shen writes Daria’s loneliness is magnificent, and the story itself I found complex and beautiful- like its characters. There’s always something that anchors her stories to our world, whether it’s pop culture references, music, or in this case poetry. The journal entries at the beginning of each chapter throughout this story themselves I found genuinely poetic and honestly so raw I wanted to cry. They were such a clever and tantalising way to update the reader on both Daria and Penns’ emotional progress and stance before each new chapter, and the way they’re written and develop and eventually come together is stunning. The voice acting in this story I also found fantastic, they really embodied their characters.
All of the books in this series are satisfying; each character addictive in their inherent imperfection and complex back story. A good reminder that everyone is dealing with something, even if you can’t see it.

Don't waste your time
This is one of the worst books I have ever read/listened to. I don't mind teenage angst but this book is just ridiculous, not even the sex scenes could keep me interested hahaha it's so negative, and what the hell is with her depraved relationship with the school principal?! It's not sexy to be abusing a student in any way.
The audiobook itself is well read, the narrators have done a good job. Just a crap storyline

Unexpected
I honestly did not expect to be so enthralled by this book. But I couldn’t stop listening. Totally consuming and hot and heartbreaking.

A must read!
Pretty Reckless by LJ Shen is one of those books that you have a hard time putting down. I felt like I had been transported to another world while listening to this audiobook. I've found myself making excuses to get in the car so I could escape to Todos Santos and finally reach the end of Daria and Penn's story.
Daria is the rich princess and captain of the cheer squad who is living in her seemingly perfect castle. In reality though she is the school's mean girl with her list of sins growing longer and longer. Yet despite this, you can't help but like her and want for her to get her happy ever after.
Then you have Penn, the poor kid, the bad boy from the wrong side of the tracks. He's captain of the rival football team working towards a college scholarship so he can turn it all around.
Daria and Penn have all of the chemistry and so much emotion between them - although it's not always the good emotions.
This story gave me so many feels, I can't think of another book which had me swinging so hard from one extreme to the other. A must read!

The ending is overboard
Didn't read the last 3 chapters. I know this is written for YA and teenagers but the ending is so overdone. Good banter in the first half. I read a lot of books and my bar is not that high, so when I say I didn't finish a book it means it went south fast. The scene with all the teenagers together towards the end is so unbelievable, especially the banter between characters during that moment. I think it's an amazing feet to write a book and perhaps that overcooked style is popular with an audience under 18. However, I still think a portion of the audience that age would also be too smart.

Deserves 10 stars
L. J. Shen is a genius.
I always think she can’t out do her previous books but she definitely can.
Each time I’m amazed at how clever her writing is and how your interest never fades.
Loved the narration. Michael Crouch was brilliant.

Pretty Reckless
Wow I don’t even know where to start with this!!
I have been waiting what feels like forever to get my hands on this book and it was everything and more. The hot holes still being their badass selves and the totholes (love this name for them) growing older and wiser is what I live for.
L. J. Shen is truly a master with the words and knows how to weave a story that will have you hooked from start to finish.
Seeing the relationship between Daria and Penn grow and adapt to each new hurdle that life through at them as well as the everyday struggles that teenagers (as well as the parents of said teenagers) face and conquer was so very real and relatable that it felt like I was experiencing those things right along with the characters.
Not going to lie, I went through most of this book hating Mel and Via and basically just wanting to scream and throw my ereader across the room at some points with some of the actions and decisions that had been made, Jaime had always been my least favourite of the hot holes, with Daria being my least favourite of the offspring but by the end of the book I had a new found understanding and love for the hurt and pasts that shaped them all as people.
The way L. J. Shen wove this tale, you can’t help but to fall in love with even the most broken and screwed up characters and gave a life and light to issues and flaws that I think everyone has faced and experienced at some point.
If you haven’t read the Sinners of Saint series yet I can recommend enough that you get on that so that you may experience all that is Pretty Reckless. It is truly 100/10!!!

SHEN DOES IT FOR HER READERS AGAIN - 2019 🔱
I just want to quickly say before i start my review that i got the audio version of this book, but haven't had great experiences with previous audios so was a little hesitant. I can't get into them, the voices are just all wrong from what's in my head BUT... I am happy to say this might have been the one to convert me? Pretty Reckless was the first audio book I have ever listened to from start to finish in one sitting and I loved it! It took me the first chapter or so to get use to it... it's like my brain struggles to read the story if I'm not actually reading it, but come a few chapters in and I had this sheeit down like Charlie Brown 😉 OR, It might have been the story was just so damn good a didn't give a hoot what it sounded like?
WOW, WOW, WOW....PR (Pretty Reckless) is going straight into my 2019 BEST OF BOOKS, and let me tell you they are far and few between. I am truly awed at how LJ SHEN continues to outdo herself and just when you think her last book is best of, she blows her readers minds with her next!!! Makes it next to impossible to single any of her reads out as your favorite, let me tell you!
PR is the next generation of the "Hothole's" literally... and this book featured Jamie and Mel's daughter, Daria and what it means to be the "popular" girl and sometimes it just ain't all its cracked up to be? This book blew any expectations I had right out of the universe and I'm so glad I temporarily dropped everything to hear this one out, couldn't have put it down if I tried... the story revolves around high school life but was anything and everything high school. If you are one to shy away from these reads, PLEASE DON'T! This is so beyond what you would expect from this sub-genre... and there is no "norm" when it comes to this author, it's not even in her vocabulary, so I'm not surprised.
Firstly, I was totally shocked by the family dynamics. Who would have thought it would be an anything but perfect? What a tragic yet DEFYing outcome.
Secondly, Penn and Daria... perfect! From the first time they met the bond was real and I was hooked. A boy from the wrong side of the tracks to a girl with everything, yet both lived in worlds with equally fkd up situations, this book dealt with some pretty serious real-life stuff that can make or break you, but Daria, Penn and everyone (Well maybe not everyone) handled it wonderfully, all contributing to making this story just a little bit special 😍
Thirdly, there is no thirdly....I cannot say anymore!
The only thing left to say is GO. GET. THIS. BOOK!
