About this listen

A slow-burn friends-to-lovers romance from Cara Bastone, an audio bestselling author, perfect for fans of Jo Watson, Lauren Layne and Hannah Orenstein.

A surprise pregnancy leads to even more life-changing revelations in this heartfelt, slow-burn friends-to-lovers romance of found family and unexpected love.

Eve Hatch has always been content to coast through her life, with a steady, if uninspiring, job and a cozy apartment in Brooklyn, close to her childhood best friend Willa and far from the traditional midwestern family who never really understood her.

But when she finds herself pregnant after an uncharacteristic one-night stand, her comfy life is suddenly up in the air. Eve's loyal friendship with Willa is feeling tense, right when she needs her the most, and it's actually Willa's steadfast big brother, Shep, who steps up with the most support and he's...suddenly kinda hot?

As if she needs one more complication, there's also the baby's father, who is technically supportive, but majorly conflicted. But as Eve struggles to figure out the next step in her expanding reality, she begins to realize that family and love, in all forms, can sneak up on you when you least expect it.

So loving and heartwarming 💜
This was almost like a women's fiction. It didn't just have romance but this story was about motherhood, love, friendships, family, finding oneself and so much more! I loved every part of it. There was never a moment where I was bored. This also felt so real yet hopeful and touching. I also love the MMCs she writes. I don't see them often - quirky, sweet, caring, attentive, shy pining & smitten towards the girl and the most green flag ever. I cannot say this enough....that Cara Bastone's stories bring me that kind of joy which only a few authors have managed to. She has quickly become one of my all time favourites. Also, the audiobooks are like none other. I have thoroughly enjoyed them.

One of my favorite authors!

👩‍💻 Long-time Fan Perspective
I’ve been a long-time fan of Cara Bastone and have heard and read almost all her books. She’s one of my favorite authors! Normally, she dives straight into the story, letting characters unfold naturally—but this one felt a little different.

⏳ The Slow Start
The first 4 chapters move at a slower pace, filled with character introspection and scene-setting. At first, I even thought it was audio setup (no Dolby Atmos or surround sound!)—but no, it’s simply a gentler, more gradual build.

💬 The Heart of the Story
What kept me hooked were the relationships and wisdom woven throughout:
• 🩺 The bond between the nurse and Eve
• 👩‍👦 Karen’s wise words to her son
• 🤝 Shep’s calm, grounded advice to Eve

Each little pearl of wisdom added warmth and depth.

👧 Nostalgia & Themes
The childhood friendship between the three main characters was touching and nostalgic—it pulled me right back to my own childhood. At its core, this is a story about facing an unplanned pregnancy and how people around you shape that journey. Honest, human, and tender.

💖 The Payoff
By the last six chapters, the romance unfolds beautifully. And Shep—oh, Shep! Written with such kindness, wisdom, and heart, he’s easily the soul of the story.

✨ Final Thoughts
While not my absolute favorite Cara Bastone book (her others hooked me faster), this is still a thoughtful, tender, and rewarding listen. A true slow-burn romance with characters that linger long after the final chapter.

the narration is just as perfect as the writing is. not everyone can write an accidental pregnancy - especially where the baby daddy isn't the MMC but involved and pull it off this good. the narrator brings eve to life so perfectly I just wanted to keep listening. 10/10 reccomend.

heart warming
