Publisher's Summary

Vann, the gorgeous, leather-jacket-clad new bad boy in school, just set his eyes on me.

I'm not really good at making friends. That's simply a fact. I'm happy enough if I can just get through the school day, avoid eye contact with anything that breathes, and make it home where my family can continue ignoring my existence and I can play video games in peace.

But then he crashes into my life like a tidal wave. The hot new senior at Spruce High. The bad boy everyone can't stop talking about. The one with the leather jacket, smoldering eyes, and cloud of danger following him. The one called Vann.

My whole life changes overnight. Now, I want different things. I want an end to my lonesomeness. I want to stand up to the jocks who keep pushing me around.

But most importantly, I want to know what Vann's lips taste like. And why he looks pained every time his dark eyes catch mine in class. And why he keeps paying attention to me when the rest of the town doesn't. And why every time I open my mouth to speak, my racing heart chokes me.

I don't know what's coming for me in my last year at Spruce High, but I sure hope I'm ready for it.

Contains mature themes.

What just happened!?!

I Loved the job the narrators did trying to bring this story to life. I enjoyed other books in this series but, this ONE was so long and drawn out. Hot attraction between the main characters but, it never really got HOT.. the sexy scenes were so dull. I did finish and liked some of the plot but, idk how to explain what was wrong. I'm not sure it's worth the credit or your time to listen. 🤷🤦 The Best part of the Whole story is the Epilogue.

The good and the bad

Great story about Spruce, Texas. The performer who voiced Toby to life is great. The same cannot be said for the performer who voiced Van - pedantic and breathy are the kindest adjectives I can write. Despite that, it was great to visit Spruce again and I look forward to more from Daryl.

This is much more a romance than the other books.

I think this is the second best book in the series behind Wrangled. Banner's struggles with efficient endings crops up again. I also think Van's anger issues are a little overblown in their plot importance. (Van was routinely in the right). With that said Toby and Van are wonderful characters-they are probably the best realized characters in the series. They don't track any particular stereotypical pairing (i.e. they are both kind of nerds. they both are kind of rebels). Toby's anxiety and Van's temper are realistically realized; best their romance feels completely natural.

With that said-and I am not sure why this is, might be the age of the characters (? both are repeatedly asserted to be 18)-but the erotic content here is less explicit than the other books- the characters have sex but the description is chaste and reserved. If you are looking for erotica this isn't it. Again I'm not sure why Banner makes this choice-he is clearly comfortable writing explicit content based on his other works-but this novel's story is explicitly Toby's first relationship. It makes sense for the character to be less explicit esp. given his anxiety . (Van too is characterized as having trouble opening up). In context this choice works but I think I should note it.

Cooper who plays Toby gives the best full performance in the series. It takes a chapter or two to fully appreciate what Cooper is doing-Toby is bottled up and repressed at the start of the novel-because he is so subtle in how he let's emotion in to his voice.

This novel works really well with Wrangled.

THIS BOOK IS AMAZINGLY A MUST!

I don’t know where to start, BUT I loved the whole story and where it went! I’ve read every Spruce romance and it was definitely the best and the kicker! I honestly wish it wouldn’t be the last, especially because I wanna see Hoyt (side character) get his happy ending but I loved it completely and the creativity of this story had me smiling from ear to ear! It has made me fall in love with the development of all the characters and the town itself and truly inspired my life. It’s just a must read, sweet, sexy and dramatic in the best ways possible!

Spruce Texas

I’m a little disappointed in this one. I loved this whole series. I grabbed them as soon as they came out on audio and this one was no different. The steam level in this one was a 2 out of 10. The other books were an 8 of of 10. Big difference with this one and it was long like 14 hours I think it was.Van and Toby were ok but not as funny as the other couples from the previous books. Also the connection with the other characters wasn’t there. I guess I was bored with this one and although I finished it, I couldn’t wait for it to be over.

Deliciously sweet and sincere

Enjoyed this immensely. It was beautiful and to a degree innocent. The characters were convincing as teenagers and the relationships realistic.

Rebel without a cause fights for love

Grrr. Like the Star Wars movies, the first three books in this series are my favourites and we shall never speak of this book or the last one again. Openly gay, Toby has been systematically bullied by Hoyt and his cronies forever until rebellious bad boy and new student, Vann, befriends him. Quick to anger, Vann scares students and teachers alike and even Toby has his doubts. This started promisingly but the constant teen drama and Toby’s dumb decisions slowly eroded my good will. Bullying in high school was the last book’s theme, so I felt like we’d more than covered this ground, especially the “I only bully you because I love you” excuse. Yes, Freud theorised that homophobia was caused by latent same-sex feelings, but some people are just nasty bullies. I found the bullying scenes hard to take, I don’t think the trigger warnings were adequate. The dialogue sounded way too erudite for high school students, constantly describing Toby’s brother as a ‘mouth-breather’ was pretty mean, it got way too schmaltzy by the end, and why was the sex off-page? Audio narrators Chris Chambers and Cooper North were great but their voices were a little hard to tell apart - pairings in the first three books were better.
