Story
Our lives are driven by a fact most of us can't name and don't understand: whether we're an introvert or an extrovert. This defines who our friends and lovers are, which careers we choose and whether we blush when we're embarrassed. At least a third of us are on the introverted side. Some of the world's most talented people are introverts. Without them, we wouldn't have the Apple computer, the theory of relativity and Van Gogh's sunflowers.

Publisher's Summary
This is the age of addiction, a condition so epidemic, so all-encompassing and ubiquitous, that unless you are fortunate enough to be an extreme case, you probably don't know that you have it. What unhealthy habits and attachments are holding your life together? Are you unconsciously dependent on food? Bad relationships? A job that doesn't fulfill you? Numb, constant perusal of your phone, looking for what? My qualification for writing this book is not that I am better than you, it's that I am worse. I am an addict, addicted to drugs, alcohol, sex, money, love and fame.
The program in Recovery has given Russell Brand freedom from all addictions, and it will do the same for you.
This system offers nothing less than liberation from self-centredness, a new perspective, freedom from the illusion of suffering for anyone who is willing to take the necessary steps.

Wonderfully and brilliantly life changing
Life changing, impactful, engaging, Rhythmic, poetic. I laughed out loud, shed a tear, had epic realisations for myself and my close friends and family. I would recommend this to everyone, we’re all victims to this obscure thing we call reality - Russell helps take of the rose tinted specs and guides us humorously through his own life challenges and realisations and in turn empowers us to face our darkest fears. In one sentence: this is life changing

loved this book... can be quite confronting, and yet truly eye opening. he inspires you to radically change your life and so you realise that addiction is a gift that forces you to radically change the way you live... to be more conscious, wiser and to live with virtue. And his humor helps make the topic less dense, less serious and the work more enjoyable

Everyone should read this book
This book was heartbreaking, uplifting and inspiring at the same time. I'd been looking forward to its release and it didn't disappoint. Although I wouldn't consider myself an additct in the obvious junkie/alcoholic way, I've always felt that something was missing. Russell makes you consider how you live your life and your drives in ways I haven't heard before, even though I've read a number of self help/yoga/meditation books. I don't think he gets the credit he's due for trying to change people's life for the better. I'm glad he's found happiness with his new wife as well.
Narration added nuance that may be missed in reading the book.

R. I'm so proud of you.
this book was so much more than I expected it to be. it's educational but it's also funny and warm. so warm. so relatable. I've cried zkot through it. relief, sadness. it all. chapter 5 ending was particularly hard to listen to. I haven't slept because I needed to hear it.
I printed off 5 copies of the work books to take along to some people. I have a PDA in addictions counselling and the workbook is so much better than any other one I seen.

Funny, Frank, Thought Provoking, and Evangelical
I'm not a guy who swears, but Russell uses the F word to full effect, and it is appropriate when in the context of "life is messed up!"
It's challenging to look at ones own life in the context of the foibles, addictive and compulsive behaviors that mitigate against the possibility of a rich contribution to society not based on what one can gain but what one can give.
He presents here a rehash of the twelve step program but gives it a vitally and veracity that is very appealing. He himself is self deprecating, aware of his privileged position yet it is clear it's not come easy and there has been a high price. Particularly resonance for me (not my experience) from empathy was the young child that felt he was the cause of his mothers cancer! Like Russell my rage and foibles in life are also against my Mother and abandoned, and no rationalizing can soothe the void within. Russell has with bravery talked the demons within and the last chapter where he is at the birth of his daughter is all consuming in drawing you in. He is a great story teller/narrator earthy, witty, wise, a dexterity seldom seen, I loved his work here. I'm not ready to take the steps he advocates but I did find I have ears that hear.

GREAT LISTEN
I loved this book and I loved Russell's narration. It is honest and I found it comforting to hear someone else speak out loud about what we all sometimes feel. Ironically, I think I will keep listening to this book over and over! He is so honest about himself and his life and I find that a very generous act. After listening to this it is impossible to ignore your own feelings and behaviour. I think this book could be a comfort to anyone who has anxiety, because ultimately I think that is the cause of a lot of addictive behaviour. I would like to think he would go on to narrate more books - he has great communication.

Are you a bit F*cked?
Well if so then this book is for you. Russell breaks down the 12 step program addicts use into simple terms everyone can understand. Russell then takes you through how to implement them into your life to free yourself from any form of addiction.
I loved Russell's last book and even though I already meditate and had solved a lot of my personal issues I still found this book helpful. Most of us have probably had nothing to do with a the 12 steps and Russell demystifies a lot of the religious mumbo-jumbo associated with them.
Whether you're a drug addict, social media addict, use movies and TV to escape reality a little too often this book will help you to recognise and overcome these addictions.
Keep the books coming, Russell, can't wait to see what you write next.

If you could sum up Recovery in three words, what would they be?
helpful, interesting, mind opening
What did you like best about this story?
Russell has finally put to good use the extensive experience he has gained through his years of struggle and self analysis - I really think this book is incredibly useful not just to recovering addicts but to everyone who has something in their life that they consider a pattern or problem.
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
The book made me laugh with recognition and cry with relief that some body else gets it
Any additional comments?
I think every single person in the world needs to be self improving all the time which is why I recommend this book. I also think that Russell seems like a genuine guy who is very introspective and thoughtful and everyone can benefit from his insight.

Narration is awful
I am sure the author meant well with this book but by the end of the second chapter I had to stop listening. I would rather slide down a giant razor blade wearing a helmet full of wasps than listen to him say another word. He extrapolates simple points into overwhelmingly colourful hyperbole to the degree that it loses it's meaning. He needs to make his points WAY more succinctly and also needs to fall out of love with the sound of his own voice in order to be a effective. Only buy this book if you like the sound of fingernails clawing down blackboards.

I was not impressed
Although he covers the 12 steps of AA I found that he used too many epithets to extra narrative that ultimately was superfluous.
He spoke way too fast than normal people do and there were no pauses. Too fast passed and too much literally sauce, that sometimes felt like ranting.
I would not recommend it if you are in a 12 step program already.
Thanks
